Spoke with the service manager and he did confirm this is the way its intended to work - its related to the amount of pressure that can be put on the sunroof as it closes, since its closes up instead of down - any more pressure and it could increase chances of breaking the sunroof glass - therefore they put a water management system in place to assist on those car wash times or heavy downpours...would still love to hear from an actual technician or someone with Toyota corporate to confirm this.....

It's not just Toyota, sunroofs have been built this way for around 50 years or so now as far as I've seen. They're designed to leak to an extent around the glass seal, hence why they have gutters and drains. Might be older but frankly I'm not positive.

Only one I've seen in person that didn't have drains was a 1974 Roadrunner. Really rare car, if memory serves one of around 800. It wasn't glass though either, and fun fact; it was also a hand crank.

Has anyone confirmed our sunroofs have 4 drain holes? From what I can see the rail covers the tray where the rear ones would be if they exist. Unless I’m missing something in the design of the sunroof cartridge.
