Everyone knows how low and large the tailpipe is on the 4th Gen and to me; it was just too quiet. I know what you’re thinking…it’s a 4-cylinder and it’s best not to hear it. But the same was said about the V-6 in my 5th Gen 4Runner; and I did dual exhaust on that too and it came out sounding great. So I said let’s fix two problems with one solution. Let’s get the tailpipe tucked up, and the exhaust sounding like a truck should. So I followed the same exact formula I did with my 4Runner; Flowmaster Super 44, and Dual Polished Tips. Here is the result.

I'll probably end up doing some sort of exhaust for performance reasons but personally never could stand the sound of a 4cyl. I like everything about the power train of these trucks except the noises it makes. Between the DI rattle and exhaust tone that is. Six cylinders can sound alright with the right muffler. Eights sound good pretty much reguardless. Tens only sound good if and only if they can rev high enough. Twelve will always be the song of angels (I'll never forgive formula one for downsizing).

Yours does look good though. Out of curiosity, did you retain the spare tire? How's it look underneath? All stainless?

Yep, it still has the spare tire. Probably not going to fit too big of a tire in the spare carrier, but there’s still some space around it. I had it custom made at Exhaust Systems Hawaii and so far it was the first one ever done.

I would have gone with a huge Apexi N1 universal muffler angled up behind the back bumper lol.
Give it time, if Toyota ever builds that X-Runner concept you’ll probably see someone do exactly that.
