Hi,

While washing the car, I noticed that the body side moldings installed by the dealer are poorly attached… lots of debris are getting stuck between the moldings and the body.
They agreed to replace them at my appointment next summer (I live far away, I need to take a ferry with the car and stay two nights there), but I’m wondering what the clear coat wear will look like in a year, and whether I can trust them not to damage the paint when replacing them…
Last month, during my annual inspection, they scratched the fuel tank cover and took the liberty of doing a very poor polishing job…

Some examples

I noticed that on a TRD OR I saw on the street

On older gens Toyota used a thick gasket maker like material between overfenders and the body that would have filled gaps like this and yours above

As I recall, that is a dealer added option. Personally I would remove them.

I not used to work on the body, I don’t want to ruin the paint, and I don’t know how it is under the molding because of all the debris stuck between the tape and the body

Sounds like they did not properly prep the surface prior to installing the moldings. I have had them on numerous vehicles and they do a great job of protecting the doors. They have also lasted over 10 years and never peeled back.

If the dealer is going to replace them, then get it done.

What does it look like without....mine is coming off too.

Not great to be honest. Left a lot of holes from the clips. I had one come off half way when on my way back from Colorado. I removed it for the rest of the trip and was not impressed by the look. haha

The bodyside moldings are held on using 3M tape.
