This is wild...i hope I'm not underwater on the loan if this ever happens to me.
I wonder how much the insurance companies are going to raise rates on all of us as this goes through the channels in the insurance companies knowing that a minor rear end accident can cause us to have a totaled vehicle.

In the old days of quality and low costs, frames were repaired. On what was known as a frame puller or a frame straightening machine.

I’ve been waiting to post this until after all the paperwork completed. The title is accurate. Yes, this is nuts.

My now-first 2024 Tacoma was involved in a ā€œminorā€ fender-bender back in October. It was parked on the street. Another vehicle accelerated from stop about 20-30 feet behind it and missed the turn. The other vehicle hit my rear-left quarter and did some seemingly cosmetic damage, except.

We towed the truck into the shop because the accident bent the muffler down into the wheel. Irritating, but also not a big deal. About a month passes and I get a phone call from the insurance adjuster. The person says, ā€œAre you sitting down? You’ll want to, because you won’t believe this: We’re going to have to total your truck.ā€

Shocked, I asked what happened. She responded, ā€œToyota did something strange with this new Tacoma,ā€ I’m paraphrasing now, ā€œTurns out the receiver hitch is no longer ’bolted onā€˜ to the frame like every other truck. It is now a unified part of the frame itself. Toyota allows for 4mm of frame flex before the frame has to be fully replaced. Yours exceeded that tolerance at the receiver.ā€

ā€The crazy part,ā€ she continued, ā€œis that there are no frames available. We’d have to order one … from Japan … and pay to have it brought over on a ship. But, they’re on back-order. We wouldn’t expect to see one for over a year. We can’t have you without a vehicle that long, so we’re totaling your truck.ā€

Yep, that’s right, a ā€œminorā€ rear fender-bender resulted in my now-first 2024 Tacoma being totaled. I was able to source another one, but what a story. The moral, I guess, is be careful where you park.
Hello! I am in a very similar situation where I was rear ended in my 2024 and the hitch bent. The collision center told me that the hitch is repairable and so are the frame brackets that were bent in the collision. I’m very doubtful about the $11,000 quote and I am wondering if it’s eventually going to be totaled.

I haven't had much experience over insurance claims, and veery thankfully but in my little experience I doubt they're going to total out your $60,000 truck over $11,000, especially if it's the other parties insurance covering the cost.

If your truck was only worth $20,000, maybe lol.

My buddy Tboned someone in his $25,000 car causing nearly $10,000 in damages and their insurance covered it and fixed the car.
