Folding Badlands Shovel

Just picked up this little foldable Badlands shovel from Harbor Freight---- it can be used fully extended (straight) as in pic below and at a 90-degree angle as well. Comes w/ pouch and hardly takes up any space in the truck.

I worked as a brick tender for 15 years. I have literally wore out shovels. So, I'm very comfortable with a conventional shovel, either square or pointed. I'm kind of a newbie to the off-road thing, I haven't purchased this style of shovel for 2 reasons. I already have a normal shovel and I'm not sure of what a shovel like this is good for other than being compact. If I'm that low to use a mini shovel, couldn't I just use my hands? I'm not trying to be argumentative, could someone explain to me why I should get one? I guess a normal shovel doesn't fit well in a jeep or bronco, is that what it is for?

I have one of these not from HF but exactly the same. It’s mostly used for doing my business when remote camping but it comes in handy around fire pits and fine tuning a flat spot to pitch a tent. If I ever needed it to get unstuck, it would definitely be better than using my hands. Very convenient that it folds up into a very small package. I keep it behind the seat with the jack.

What's a brick tender?

A brick layer needs a steady supply of bricks and mortar so he can focus on just laying brick (or cement block) A brick tender sets up an area with material for a brick tender and keeps him supplied. The job would include setting up and tearing down scaffold, mixing and distributing mortar, making cut pieces, clean up. It's very physical work.

It's for people who aren't going to carry a normal length shovel, which doesn't fit in much but a long bed. If you have to dig, it's still faster than hands, and with the serrated edge, you can get into harder ground than you can with your hands, plus it moves more dirt than your hands. It's not as efficient as a full shovel, for sure, but it also fits behind the small seat in the tacoma with the jack. Bonus, you can fold over the handle to a 90 degree, and use it to sit one cheek on to take a shit in the woods, after you used it to dig a proper cat hole. That you cant do with a full shovel.
