HELP! EXHAUST/BURNING SMELL

So I've had my truck since March 2024...Every so often usually when accelerating up a hill or when I press the gas on cold morning I will get an exhaust type smell like burning oil or exhaust smell... I'm only at 12k miles but I'm trying to avoid going to Toyota... Also I know these trucks let in alot of smell through the vents because if I'm behind a diesel or driving by the dump the cabin fills with that smell... So it's not another vehicle it's definitely coming from mine.... Is there some stuff I can check before going into the dealer and letting them dig around under my hood.... Maybe a bad/loose hose or something

Thanks appreciate any advice also has anyone had these smells in their truck?

If you think you are burning oil don't mess around with random advise. To know for sure, have your used oil analysis done. Go search the Motor Oil Geek on YouTube and use his company. Speed Diagnostics. Educate yourself if you're not familiar already. State your concerns on the lab form and they will advise you with data to present to Toyota if indeed you are burning oil. Please note that auto manufacturers have an oil burn range rate you will have to battle. I hope this helps.

Are you getting more of a sulfur smell? If so likely a fuel quality issue, not unusual to get smells under load climbing hills since the programming is not always 100% depending on where you live altitude wise, weather etc. I live at 2200ft above sea level and all my vehicles suffer from this not just my Tacoma.
When I buy better quality fuel 91 octane or better it rarely happens.
On cold starts the mixture is very rich so it's normal for engine exhaust to smell a bit overpowering.

Nope not yet... I've stayed away from dealer this summer but I have some stuff that needs checking before my warranty is out... This is on the list

Do you have the cold-weather stuff attached, since you live in Alaska? I'm wondering if a wire or something is just getting hot and causing the smell. When I lived in Delta Junction, my Ford Explorer (Exploder) which was a lease, had heating pads glued to bottoms of the transmission and oil pans. (As well as many other heaters....coolant, battery)

I'd get a bright flashlight and look all around the engine bay, top and bottom.

Maybe a minor oil leak that's finding its way on to something hot?. The occasional oil leak around the areas where the block, timing covers and valve cover all come together have been known on A25/M20 Dynamic Force engines. The T24 is a close cousin and shares those same areas. You'll notice the engine assembly plant places extra FIPG material to combat this potential. Look for the FIPG material that's squeezed out on either side of the valve cover, near the front.

I need to do some digging this weekend. I'm hoping I can see something, going through the lemon process with my last new car was such a time suck. Techs would often say they found nothing

I mean, if it's a heavy burning smell that doesn't really sound normal. Other than the typical smells of a new engine early on, I can't say I've experienced anything like that. I'm at 5k miles.

Not heavy, intermittent, and as others have described.

yea failed weld at cat. Smoke tester through the bung at the upstream sensor. Bought a smoke tester, haven't gotten around to it yet
