How to safely lock pet in running Tacoma?

My F250 had police mode. You could jump out leave it running and lock with the remote. Would not physically go into gear without the fob. I tried. I sorely miss that feature.

Trailhunter owner here, I park and leave the truck running, set the climate to auto. Put my printed sign on the screen like my Tesla dog mode. Leave the fob in the console. Lock the truck with the physical key. The truck will continue to cycle thru and keep the climate cool for our dog. Can see it on my app as well.

What I usually do is just turn the truck off and then use the app to turn it back on right away. then it stays locked and AC is blowing on the pup

So first of all, thank you. I swear I tried with the manual key and did not get it to work as expected, but it was a very hot day and I had tried everything else I could think of first, the heat may have been robbing me of brain cells.

I do have one question. Why leave the fob in the console? It seemed to let me manually lock the driver door with the key whether I did or not.
