Heya folks,

I was not 100% sure which category to post this in so please redirect me if this was not the correct answer.

Every other vehicle I have ever owned once keyless entry became a thing, I could just leave it running, get out, step away, then hit the lock button to lock the doors. My Trailhunter does not seem to let me do this. Once I exit with the key fob, pressing lock will not let the doors lock at all if the engine is running.

Is there a setting I am missing that will let me override this behavior?

Thanks,

Hmmm…Try with the hardware key?

That is a good idea, thank you! I will give that a shot tomorrow, but if that is the only way to do it, man that is a design flaw on Toyotas part.

Attached is an excerpt from the owners manual. See column one, at the bottom.

Reads that the truck cannot be locked while in Accessory mode or On.

It does not mention using the physical key; that might be an option.

Edit,

Notice the comment on the second attachment: using the physical key can trigger the alarm. Different manufacturer, but I encountered this using a rental. Turn off, lock the car with the key, leave. Return, unlock using physical key, alarm goes off. While the alarm was going off, get in, start the car to stop the alarm.

^ I feel this has to do with the chipsets and authentication. When locking/unlocking using the physical key, you're physically authenticating to the truck. With the fob and hand-in-door handle, using the chipset algorithm in the physical key and the radio transmitter of the fob, you're logically authenticating to the truck with an encrypted key. In the former, I could be picking the lock. In the latter, it proves I have the key/chipset.

You're attempting to physically lock the truck while running. IDK what will happen. Maybe that's a great solution. Maybe the truck will immediately unlock itself. Maybe the alarm will go off when later unlocking. You'll just have to experiment and see what happens.

When we need to leave our dog in the truck and we need it to be running and the AC blowing, I roll down the front drivers window and exit the vehicle. Ensure the key fob is on my person. Close the door. Reach in through the window and press the door lock button. Next press the window roll up button and pull your arm out quick. The truck is locked and running. When you return the key fob electronics will not engage the truck so you need to remove the physical key from the fob and use it unlock the drivers door. You will have to press the unlock button on the door to unlock all the other doors.

I don't have a pet I want to lock up, however it would be nice if I could pull up to a gas station, hop out, and lock the truck so I can go buy a soda without wondering if my phones gonna still be there when I get back. Especially in the winter.

Yeah,

This feels like its over engineered to be idiot proof and keep you from locking the keys in the truck, but they need a toggle in the menu or something that is basically, "Let me take my chances.".

I think what other people have done to keep the car running for the inverter is leave a fob in the car and lock it using the door controls, and have a second set of keys to open it back up.

On cold winter mornings I sweep the snow off the door frame, get in and start the rig, turn on the heat and defrosters, and use the key from the fob to lock the doors with the driver's side door lock from the outside while I go in the house. Then use that same key in the same door lock to unlock it before driving away. Guess I haven't tried it with only the A/C running.

What if you turn off the truck with A/C set then as you are walking away, remote start the truck. Should be locked with engine running and ac should come back on where it was set before you turned truck off. However, I think it will only run for 10 min and then shut off by default. Not sure if that can be changed. Should also be able to remote start again with the app if you subscribe to it.

I turn off the truck, get out and lock it. Then I turn it back on with the remote. It will stay on for 10 minutes. I’m not leaving my dog in it for long anyway. Not the perfect solution. Toyota should have a dog mode.
