My ‘24 Sport fell under the 2024 transmission service bulletin/recall. At the time of the notice, I was not having any trouble at all. I now have 23K miles on it. Over the last two or three weeks it seems like the shift from park to reverse is rough. I may be imagining it, but it also seems like there’s an occasional hint of roughness in the lower gears while accelerating.

Those of you that had transmission issues:
Did your problems begin like this?
Does this sound like an issue the recall will address?

Any other insight is appreciated.

Does this happen all the time or just when you first start driving after the truck has sat overnight/for a while?

21K on mine that falls under the TSB and I have rough shifts first thing in the morning and the occasional clunk/clank when shifting from D-R or P-R. Seems with these trans that is 100% normal and many others have the exact same clunkiness until it warms up & the occasional shift clunk.

My truck does not fall under the TSB, but I have noticed this weird chattering sound sometimes. only about 5K miles 2024.

Anyone else have this noise? Mine does sometimes shift hard from D-R or P-R, but very rarely.

I had no real noticeable issues with the transmission before it failed. The only 'thing' seemed to be poorer gas mileage than I expected. When it failed, the pickup worked fine until it failed to move from a stoplight. Moved shift lever all around, but still stalled. When I shifted the automatic to the "manual" side, it was stuck in 6th and wouldn't change. With high rpm's it moved slowly out of the traffic lane. After rig sat for a bit while I moved the shift lever all over, I was able to move off roughly. Drove about ten blocks, turned the pickup off. After talking to the local mechanic, I started it up and it drove just fine. Took it to the dealer a couple hours away without an issue. She said debris plugged one of the sensors in the transmission, then fell away when it was turned off. Metal particles found in the pan when removed. Toyota replaced the transmission and I've not had any issues in 18K miles since. This doesn't answer your issue, but was my experience when the transmission failed at 2,500 miles.

It is a new issue and inconsistent. I will be observant about when it occurs and whether being cool or warm makes any difference. Thank you!

My mileage is also lower than expected, but I wouldn’t have tied that to the trans. Your story at least prepared me for what to do if it does fail on the road. 🤛🏻

I'm not under the TSB and sometimes get a thunk or hard shift into reverse when cold. It's inconsistent and most times shifts fine. Nothing has risen to the level of a possible trans issue for me.

If you park on an incline, shifts from P-R are rough and give a "clunk". My driveway is sloped and it pained me to shift out of P every time. I fixed this by enabling the automatic park brake which engages every time the vehicle is switched into park and turned off. No more clunk.

As for rough shifts, I often do get them in low gears when the truck is cold. 1-2 shifts being the biggest offender. Judging by how many times this issue has been discussed on this forum, I would say this behavior is normal.

Does yours engine/trans make a weird garbling noise around 2700-3000k rpm before it shifts into 2nd gear?

I have not noticed any ongoing or concerning sounds. It’s just the roughness and harshness of shifting, and that inconsistently. Of course you hear something when it kind of jerks into gear, but it is not consistent.

Mine does that randomly as well. I believe Its something fuel/air algorithm related to a specific ambient situation ive never cared to pinpoint.

ive had every gen tacoma, and they all made odd random engine noises and all lasted well over 300,000 miles with zero issues. I think this noise is just another characteristic, as ive heard it in other gen 4s as well.

My 3rd gen had a random engine whistle upon acceleration that disappeared somewhere around 75,000 miles.

Mine is not part of the tsb. Ive got 20,000 miles so far, and mine randomly has rough reverses that have seemed to diminish. Other 4th gens i know have the same.

I also have hard 2-3 shifts when cold. Ive learned to cushion my shifts when its cold, by letting off the throttle slightly until it warms.

it seems everyone i know has the same shifting characteristics.

my third gen had a rough, cold 2-1 downshift, and it lasted well into the 300,000 mark with no issues.

My transmission is awful, 2024 under the tsb. Have had it back to Toyota several times. It jerks, clunks, hard shifts, shudders so bad the entire truck shakes at low speeds (intermittent). They won’t do anything about it. In fact I finally got them to drop my transmission pan and inspect the fluid……fluid was perfect zero debris or discoloration. Toyota made me pay for it out of pocket.
