Hellooo everyone! First post here... Super excited to take delivery of my first Tacoma tomorrow, a bronze oxide Trailhunter!

I'm here, because while at the dealer, they do have the Yakima accessory option... but it's $1659 USD for the rack, and then $1659 for the different set of uprights that mount to a tonneau cover t-slots, and then you still need to source a retractable tonneau cover. It's gotta be the dumbest thing ever, and it's not clear what you need, and they don't even offer the whole package, and you're wasting a lot of it.

So, I'd like to ask the community for help! I'm an avid fly fisherman, and need to put my rod carrier up top on the rack, and stow, lock and protect my gear by the gate so I can change in and out of it every day when it's a little warmer.

First, can we make a list of what retractable covers are compatible with tall racks? I really like the molle style bed divider concept that mounts to the inner tracks. So, what retractable covers, with racks, are compatible with either the OEM or another divider?

If we can get that sorted, anyone wanna buy a set of unused rally bars? :)

Cheers - Btao

I had a Retrax Pro XR and Yakima HD on my 3rd gen, but didn't want to lose space in my bed to a retractable cover on my Trailhunter. And the Yakima HD bars didn't fit on the X4TS hard rollup I ended up with, so I went with the Elevate rack. Works great for my River Quiver and I occasionally put my Flycraft up there too, though usually that just goes in the bed (much easier!). Tight lines!

Awesome, thanks for the pics too, you're inspiring! I've got the 4-banger euro, and it's the length of the crosstrek i'm upgrading from lol....

Yeah, I hear you, it does seem like those retractable ones take up space, and are probably a lot harder to take off if you want to fill the bed for firewood or something. How is that one, do you like it? Easy on/off? Secure? Any recommendations on source so I can price it?

Thanks dude!

I got the cover and bars from Realtruck.com. They had a deal to get the crossbars free. I'm glad I have them. They add strength and function.

I don't take the cover off and don't expect I'll need to. Probably easy to get off, but more work to get it back on and aligned and tight.

The hard roll up has aluminum slats and is reasonably secure. Certainly much more secure than just vinyl. Looks better than I expected too.

I went with Fas-Top who makes a compatible bed mounted rack, but traditional cross bars on roof. The points to know regarding Fas-Top are 1) the tonneau and topper all in one and 2) compatible rack with much adjustability. The pic here illustrates the fit when tonneau is rolled and topper is up.

Why the traditional cross bars are a few reasons. Cross bars over the cab mean I don't have items hanging over back of the vehicle most of the time. They're easily removable. My 70 inch Yakima bars carry two boats easily, a boat and more.

I have associates with the overlander style roof racks and bed racks. The bed mount racks can get in the way for work and are not as quick release. The overlander style are dirt, snow, and ice collectors same time they're noise makers that not great for quick and easy carry of a lot of stuff.

BTAO: I struggled with the same issue. Had an OEM tri-fold bed cover installed when I bought the truck. Wanted a rod carrier after first long fishing through the Rockies (drive from FLA). So installed a Riversmith Shortcut River Quiver. Easier to leave the fly rods fully rigged in two pieces and locked in the bed than tolerate the wind noise/expnse/hassle of bed racks I otherwise didn't need.

Alright, so I got the Riverquiver on, and I think it works a lot better than I was expecting.... It's the Euro, so the longest, and I've got it slightly back from center over the OEM roof rack. The OEM rack has 3 cross bars, and pretty wide spacing, so this thing locked on solid with the quick mounts. With said quick mounts, it mounts as low as possible, and I can actually still reach it comfortably from the ground without the tailgate open. It sits about a foot in from the taillight.

I had a Crosstrek Wilderness before this, and it was the whole length of the car lol....

With the way it is now, I'm really not seeing the need for the bed rack, as it only adds cost, not necessity at this point. Still need the cover, for sure. But after having it a few days now and flipping through these glamour shots, the back bar is kinda growing on me. It fits the truck. I might do the mod another user posted, to cut the bracket flush to the deck and mount it to the t-slots of the cover.

Whaddaya think?
