I recently picked up the Michelin bed mat for my Tacoma. My only previous experience with bed protection is having the Toyota bed mat. I was hopping this mat would be all that was advertised and was pleasantly surprised.
The Toyota mat has zero side lip on it and it is also not completely form fitted. It just basically covers the floor of the bed. Lastly, It is also rather heavy. This isn’t too much of a negative or honestly something I even thought of, until I got the Michelin mat.
The Michelin mat comes very nicely packaged. I was shocked to see the actual size of the box that was dropped off at my door step.
Per the instructions. It says it may need to lay in the sun for a while to take out any bends using the sun with its natural heat. It was mid to high 80’s and took about 15 minutes prior to laying it my bed. I couldn’t get over how light this thing is. Very easy to unbox, move, and manipulate. In my opinion so far. It is the perfect thickness. Lite enough without being too flimsy and thick enough without being too bulky. It definitely appears to be more than rugged enough to endure any abuse thrown at it.
After I installed it, I noticed it fit spot on as advertised. It is completely form fitted to the bed and has a nice lip to gather any water, mud, dirt, etc. I plan to take out my D-rings and drill a hole through the oval area along the edge so I can reinstall the rings through the mat. If I had to add a con or 2. It would to have it come with the holes already there. Super minor, I. know. Maybe Michelin thought of this and figured its an easy task that the customer can just do it themselves because some customers may not want to pierce the mat at all. Again very minor and definitely not even worth criticizing. I would also like to have seen the edge bend over the end of the bed. So if you were to spray water from the cab side towards the tailgate, the water would leave the bed without getting underneath the mat. I dont know if there is enough room in that crease between the bed edge and the bottom of the tailgate to facilitate a lip. Either way, this is a hell of a nice add on to my truck.
Installed and ready for some abuse. So far I only have a couple folding chairs and my softball bag back there. I work as a career firefighter and often have to haul my gear around. I also just bought a large generator from Harbor Freight and hauled that home. Being a home owner, Im always working to improve something within my home. I use my bed often so this will be used. After all it’s a truck.
Final impression. I am very happy with this Michelin TPE mat. From the packaging, to the unboxing, to the fit. I have no doubts this will hold up to any abuse. It is advertised at a very fair price and I would strongly suggest considering this product.
