Welcome! My first Taco was a white, '87 with standard cab, 4 cyl, 4 spd manual, and hand crank windows along with a ladder rack modification. It got me started on the full Taco experience. Yours looks so clean and efficient that it kinda gave my heart a little tug. Congratulations and safe travels!
Thank you. My very first Toyota pickup from many years ago was a '79 SR5 2wd with a manual transmission and the 20R engine. The only mods on that truck were chrome rings on the steelies, a Sony stereo /cassette player, graphic equalizer, and 6 1/2" door speakers. Lot of fun. I like the charm of the lower trim trucks as a clean slate to build upon.

I also went with the manual transmission , it was a little difficult to find the color and trim pkg we wanted. We drove from central MI to St Louis MO to get it. I love driving a stick again.

Thank you! That particular color you have is awesome and is actually the color of the first 4th Gen I saw out on the road about a year ago that really caught my eye and started the itch to get a midsize truck. I really like having a manual transmission, and I really like the styling of the 4th Gen. So far it is living up to what I need it to do for me, and I hope to have it for a long time.

Welcome to the community!

Appreciate the shoutout, I've really been loving the 255 80r17's to drive on. They feel like they're better made for the 6spd, they look great in my opinion, and it's a free 1.5 inch lift.

As for the skid plates, I went ahead and got a full set of RCI steel skids, and after some off-roading this past weekend, I'm really glad I did. I came right down on a stump right where the radiator is. If you get a skid plate just remember to get a cross member because the SR's don't come with em.

One other thing that's really made me fall in love with the SR was adding seat covers. Really feels like stock seats but way more comfortable and protective of wear on the OEM cloth seats

I’ve added seat covers (gray and black), better floor mats, and a skid plate. Trifold was already on it when I bought it, I’m waiting for side steps to arrive (to keep the dings away) and will be upgrading tires when the others get worn down a little, I’m debating new wheels but I like the way @TheBandit’s look with the bigger tires.

Thank you so much for the note and the pictures. Along with the additional offroad capabilities, I do indeed like the idea of getting a little free lift, an accurate speedometer reading, and better aesthetic (to me) over the smaller stock tires. Do you mind sharing what psi you are running in the bigger tires?

Those seat covers are going on the "add" list as the fitment and tailoring looks very well executed.
I appreciate the heads up on the crossmember as I wasn't sure if that was needed on the SR to add a skid plate. I am still researching pros and cons of steel vs aluminum and looking to add protection that doesn't cause too much annoyance when performing maintenance.

I am also thinking of adding TuxMats once they become available again as I have had them in my wife's car for years now and they are awesome.

Thanks again for your welcome note,
Jeff

Thank you for your welcome note and that's a nice looking SR you have there! I was thinking of replacing the wheels too, but after seeing how @TheBandit truck looks, I am going to go that route first. Thanks again for your note and best wishes, Jeff

I'm just running 40psi for day to day. The pizza cutter style wheels can handle higher and lower PSI because they're so skinny, but I just run 40 as a safe middle ground for most of the highway drives I make.

For the skid plates, I liked that the RCI set had the quick access panel for oil changes and I should have installed a fumoto quick drain valve to make it even easier. That's probably a change I make further down the line. The RCI crossmember was also only about $40 and super easy to install with the skid plates on the SR

Here's a link to the thread on seat covers with some review and information as well as a link to the EKR covers I got. The wrinkles worked their way out over a week or so and people don't realize they're even seat covers until I tell them

The skid plate set has essentially offset the fuel efficiency lost from the air dam removal, and with the bigger tires the transmission and gearing seems to be happier. I'm getting about 20mpg per tank and got an average of 21mpg on an entire 1300 mi road trip up to Jackson hole running 85 fuel. I did find that when the speedometer is accurate on 33's, the odometer reads about 19:20, so I always multiply gas mileage readings by 1.05

Thank you! I like the clean look too and it actually wasn't intentional. A few days after I bought it and observed others in the wild, I realized "hey I am really basic" as I have no exterior Tacoma or model badging on the doors or pillars. Consequently, I have also since removed the dealership decal that was on the tailgate as well.
Welcome, SRGuy! Almost as soon as I got my Off-road MT home, I removed the Turd stickers from both fenders and the dealer stick-on badge. Save The Manuals!
