Does anyone know if you can get the power running boards for the TRD Pro?

I would imagine that in the aftermarket, there will be plenty available. But based on the desert runner/off-road expectations of the TRD Pro, I doubt they'll be an option. Electric running boards are meh in the field in my opinion, and from other people's opinions I've read, most won't run them at all.

@larrymarket's TRD Pro will predominantly do mall runs and light off-roading, like mine. So, power running boards may not be a bad thing.

I love the styling of the TRD Pro the most but I'm also a midget (5'5") so power running boards would be essential for me since it's lifted. I'm also not planning to do much off-roading (if at all). I'm mostly planning to tow a 19' fiberglass bass boat, and conventional wisdom says I should probably get the Limited, but the TRD Pro looks so much more bad ass ??‍♂

Given how the oe rock raises are installed, shouldn't be too difficult for aftermarket to produce. Would love to get one from rockslide engineering like they have for gladiator, wit an off switch so it doesn't lower when offroading. Wouldn't mind an aries one either, if they can keep it flush with body and not lose (much) ground clearance. But probably looking at $1800-3400.

I thought I'd ask ChatGpt for you. I have a Limited. FWIW, we love ours...

Power running boards are not available as a factory OEM option for the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, as the TRD Off-Road package (which includes the TRD Pro) restricts this accessory to prevent compatibility issues.

For aftermarket solutions, several brands offer compatible power running boards, though installation complexity varies significantly:

  • Aftermarket Options: Rough Country offers bolt-on power running boards (e.g., PSR652024) that fit 2024-2025 Tacoma models, featuring dual motors, LED lighting, and a 660 lb weight capacity. AMP Research and Go Rhino (VoltStep) are also listed as available electric options for the 2025 Tacoma, with prices ranging from approximately $1,300 to $2,300.
  • OEM Retrofit Challenges: While some owners attempt to retrofit Limited model OEM power running boards onto non-Limited trims, this is not recommended for TRD Pro models due to significant wiring hurdles. Community reports indicate that non-Limited Tacomas often lack the necessary pre-installed wiring pigtails, requiring extensive custom wiring and the installation of a separate ECU and control switch.
  • Functional Considerations: Many TRD Pro owners avoid power running boards because retractable mechanisms can be vulnerable to off-road debris and mud, and the steps may not deploy reliably in extreme off-road conditions. Fixed rock sliders or manual steps are often preferred for durability in off-road scenarios.
If you require power steps for a TRD Pro, you will need to purchase an aftermarket kit and be prepared for potential custom installation work, particularly regarding wiring and control integration.

I installed the AMP Research Power Steps on my TRD Pro. I guess I was an early adopter and experienced a couple of iterations of steps and controllers while they worked out the kinks.

The Good:
  • The steps tuck up very nicely and look very similar to the OEM rocker protectors.
  • The step makes it very easy for me and my wife to get in and out of the truck
  • AMP Tech support has been very helpful and persistent.
The Bad:
  • They still show them as unavailable on the Real Truck (parent company) website.

  • They have worked out about 90% of the kinks. The steps sometimes take a second or two to deploy when you open a door with the engine running.
The Ugly:
  • The motor on the 2nd version of steps they sent me hangs down below the step. That is a major issue for even mild off-roading
  • I will likely add disconnects to the wiring and remove the steps for the few mountain states trips I make every year. I have a set OEM rocker protectors I will put for those trips
