Hey folks,
We were chatting the other day about how people use their rigs off pavement, and it turned into a fun little debate.
There seem to be two pretty different styles of driving, and we weren’t sure what people usually call them.

Here’s what I mean 👇

Style 1 — Long-distance, adventure-type trips

  • Multi-day travel across deserts, mountains, forests, mud, sand — all kinds of terrain.
  • Focus on reliability, storage, and gear setup.
  • Not about the hardest trail, more about making it through the whole journey.

Style 2 — Short-distance, technical trails

  • Tough terrain – rocks, deep mud, steep climbs.
  • All about vehicle capability and driver skill.
  • Lift kits, lockers, tires – you know the deal.

We’ve been updating some of our product descriptions lately, and figured it’d be smart to ask how people here usually describe these two styles.
Not trying to sound smart — just curious to learn how everyone talks about it.
Always cool to hear from folks who’ve been doing this longer than we have.

Appreciate it, guys 🍻

I think Taco Rancher is spot on.

The problem with the term , off-road, is, what does that mean? No pavement? County roads? Maintained USFS roads? Or two-track roads?

Old manning, at 55 LOL, I mean overland camping and adventures with the wife, we're we get home, hopefully in one piece and without love bumps.
Technical part of off roading will come once. I get the winch bumper and skids from Backwoods offroad and RCI this month.
First vehicle was a 1983, toyota four wheel drive that had 18in lift and a built 320hp V6, and at 17 I ruined it, this one I'm doing right, and playing with much different, $10000 at a time.

I’d like to add something here. Overlanding, camping, off-roading, rock crawling, even baja racing are not perfect terms. There’s overlap around these activities as well as the accompanying aesthetic / gear / mods that go with them. There’s a lifestyle piece too, if I can say that without people making fun of me. It all sort of hangs together and the common denominator is people who are truck / jeep/ suv enthusiasts and love being outdoors. So take all of this with a grain of salt.

"Overland" or "Expedition". Long distance, self sustaining, full life support from the truck. Some stock trucks can do this with cargo carrying mods.

"Crawler" or "Wheeler". Recreational trail off-road driving. Heavy duty skids and sliders, lockers, dual cases, the most tire that the truck can handle, etc.

Other categories...

"Snow wheeler". Not as common, but a specific type of build for driving in DEEP snow. Look up Arctic and Polar expedition trucks for examples.

"Prerunner" or general "Desert Truck". Long travel suspension and other mods for high speed desert driving, jumps, sand dunes, etc.

"Mall Crawler". Heavily modded purely for aesthetics with no regard for functionality.

And for most truck owners...

Just a "Daily driver 4x4". Stock or light mods for light off-road capabilities, but still focused on being able to drive it to work every day or on a road trip.

Good point on the desert truck / pre runner. I would add Baja truck to that same category.
