Most of the holes where things would go through have been replaced by your aftermarket bumper. It’s the portion below the front license plate, but above the skid plate.
Oh, yeah, I remember that when I had all that plastic OEM junk

So apparently installing an aftermarket bumper is best protection? What a shame on Toyota! Based on lack of responses from other Taco owners having experienced rock piercing condenser, sounds I just got unlucky ;-(

It's just the way things are made nowadays. Everything has gone cheap. When I was checking out all the mid and small size trucks online one of the problems the Santa Cruz guys have is that their radiators are so light duty that just small debris kicked up from traffic in front of them goes right through the radiator. They've been making screens and mesh to put in front of the radiator to try to save them. Look at the Rangers. Until last year and a production line fix they had to come up with a kit to reinforce the bed. They even had a warning not to put a certain amount of weight on the bed rails or the bed would actually collapse. Everything is no deposit, no return now. Simply disposable vehicles.

I wouldn't call the openings a design flaw or oversight. Every manufacturer leaves openings, especially on trucks. Air flow is extremely important on a condenser, hence why it's at the front of the pack. Just relying on the Rad fan to pull through alone isn't necessarily adequate. Prime example was the old firebird that would overheat if you take the chin spoiler off.
