Not really. Every once in a while I get some shuddering after coming to a complete stop. I was having issues around 300-400 miles where my truck would lurch forward at a stop, but that hasn’t happened in almost 1k miles.
Yeah mine did the shuddering when coming to a stop too. The entire driveline in my truck is garbage. It’s a complete embarrassment.

Just picked up a 25 with the hybrid. There appears to be a clunk/thud when the engine kicks on and engages the drivetrain at a stop light. This is even after the engine is warm. It’s audible and you can feel it in the rear end.

Is this just “normal” for a hybrid set up? Haven’t experienced lurching but definitely a hard engagement/shift when moving from just battery to engine & battery from a stop.

Anyone else?

Does your shudder at low speeds, you can feel the truck vibrating sometimes drastically?
I don't have many miles on my '25, but I have noticed if I let up on the accelerator to slow down around 30mph, especially when going uphill, it does not seem to "downshift" so if I engage the accelerator again to speed up again it feels it is in too high a gear and will shudder almost like it might stall out before it finally "downshifts" to a lower gear. Anyone ever notice that?

I feel like that’s just a characteristic of the T24

I think @Gfenza89 has this issue. I don’t really have it. One thing I’m noticing on the overheating transmission thread is a theory that Toyota doesn’t want the transmission to downshift too much (due to 3rd gen gear hunting complaints) so this causes more transmission / TC strain and maybe some lugging if you catch it at the right moment

I get at most 3 hard shifts when the transmission is cold and then it’s very smooth. Not uncommon for modern 8ATs. The ZF in my BMW did the same thing. Definitely not a reason to forgo buying the truck IMO.

I also get the random 1 to 2 hard shift, when it’s cold. I have 20,000 miles on my Trailhunter - if anything the transmission is getting smoother which is odd

Who knows, seems like they forgot how to make transmissions the last 10 years. Mine is mainly rough and jerky with the shudder only at parking lot speeds.

Yep, my transmission has gotten smoother with more miles too. Most of the time my shifts are now super smooth, although I had harsh shifts in and out of first and second when it was new. Before I had 1k miles on my truck some shifts into reverse were incredibly rough, like something had broken.

When my engine is not fully warmed up it makes a very slight, but noticeable engagement shudder when it first restarts. Once it is all warm it is so smooth you hardly know the engine has restarted. I think that is because of how quickly the ICE fires once it is warm.

I agree. Various applications of this transmission have had a lot of complaints about harsh shifts, in both Toyota and Lexus vehicles. I don't think total smoothness is on this transmissions menu unfortunately, and some are perfect while some are terrible like @Gfenza89's truck.

Hmm maybe it was at lower speeds like almost coming to a stop as you approach a line of vehicles ahead of you that are just getting moving from a green light. You give it some gas and it is still in the last high gear and shudders. I can almost hear my dad yelling at me to downshift before I stall it as he teaches me to drive a standard. 😀

Agreed; same here. Predominantly from a stop and go standpoint. As I mentioned, it seems as though it’s a shutter or clunk or thud as the engine engages the drivetrain it takes over from the hybrid system.

So are others saying their trucks never do this or that they did in the beginning but don't now? I wonder if tapping the brake in this scenario initiates a downshift. I tend to not touch the brake unless absolutely necessary.

There's all kinds of different complaints, some say their trucks fine some say it's rough. All you can do is go to the dealer and voice your concern. Call Toyota corporate file a complaint. More people they speak up the better chance we'll have for a fix. These trucks are way too much money to perform like an old crap wagon with 300k miles. My Tacoma is down right embarrassing to drive .
