I have a trailhunter and upgraded to 285/75 tires. It seems to hang low in the spare spot. What all have you done? Has it held up with no problems?

It’s definitely low hanging fruit! If I know it’s going to get serious I take it down and throw it in the bed.

Ive heard people running 255/75 or 255/80 because they are pizza cutters and dont hang lower but still has the same diameter. I have not upgraded tires yet put I am considering this as an option.

I had my 285/70-17 on a stock TRD-OR rim underneath for a short time. I hated it. It was too low, and a royal pain to drop down and pull out. That was in the driveway. I could not imagine having to drop the wheel in the weeds.

My spare now lives on a rear swing out (Victory 4x4). It's a heavy MOFO getting it up there. But, I would rather have it on the bumper than on the ground.

Im surprised more Taco owners don't keep a full size spare on board. Ive been a Jeep guy (still am I suppose since I have a "built" TJ) and it seems like the vast majority of the Jeepers who do any real off-roading carry a full size spare. It sounds like anything over 33" wont fit in the stock location and it's a bit of a low hit area anyway.

I have a tire mount in my bed for the 35x12.5 spare. I rotate the spare in during rotations on my Jeep and will do the same on the Tacoma. I like the look of the spare on the bumper, I just didn't want the extra weight back that far.

One thing Im unsure of is how a full size spare that is rotated in would work with the TPMS sensors. I don't have those on my Jeep and I don't run a full size spare on any other vehicles that do. Im guessing I'll just not use the sensors at all once I have the new tires mounted on my wheels.

This is probably one of the reasons I'm not going to size up from the 33s that came stock. Although, I relocate it and then I can put a jerry can in the spare spot.

The 18" wheels on the hybrid are tough. My top two choices right now are 235/80R18 KO3s (32.8 diameter) or 265/70R18 Cooper Discoverer Strongholds (33.2 diameter). Both are 51 lbs and E rated, which is overkill, but options are limited in the 33" pizza cutter space. A 245/80R18 C or D rated in the mid 40 lbs would be awesome!
