Just to add a bit more to it. The midwest has been having some wild fluctuations in temperatures, and I've been working a ton of overtime so I make the same drive every day. From 20*F to 70*F variation in fuel economy on the same tank of fuel in my non hybrid has been from about 16.5mpg-22.5mpg. Which is nearly a 27% variation in economy with just a change in ambient temperature, which is substantial. By far the most variation I've ever witnessed on a vehicle.
That being said, it's still better fuel economy than anything I have daily driven to work except for my bike and the wifes 24 Corolla. Beating out even my E46 in 70*F+ temperatures. My 98 Dakota, also a midsized 4x4 for reference does the trip at roughly 14-15mpg.
