What is it?:
Our dashcam power adapters are USB converts integrated into a plug-n-play harness designed specifically to work with the autodimming mirror or OEM dashcam connector in your Toyota Tacoma. These adapters require no tools and can be installed in minutes! Simply access and unplug your rearview mirror connector, and install the Dongar adapter between your rearview mirror and your truck's electrical harness. Stick the USB module on your windshield, and connect your camera. That's it! Now your dashcam will turn on and off when you start the truck!

Amazing! Buying this on payday. There's apparently a plug hidden around the mirror as well for the OEM dashcam, I'd love to see a supplier make a pigtail for that so I can install my radar instead of splicing into wires. Hint hint. šŸ˜‰šŸ˜‰šŸ¤£

Dongar plugs are amazing - completely plug n play. No issues . I have the 10 pin . It was shipped to Canada really quickly .

Another forum member has brought to my attention that the 4G Tacoma domelight assembly might have 4 red 'clips' that must be released (instead of just the 2,+ sliding, in my video). Regardless of the domelight assembly, you'll still find the white 5-pin connector immediately in the cavity on the driver's side:

A lot of the Ford guys use our adapters + a USB to RJ11 step-up (5V back to 12V) converter like this: https://www.stickerfab.com/products...ne-uniden-radar-detector-power-cord-universal. Note that not all USB-to-RJ11 adapters are made alike... most of them on Amazon are for data transfer purposes and don't convert the 5V usb power back up to the 12V your radar uses. The StickerFab team are official resellers of our products and while their customers love this solution, it isn't officially supported by us. Unfortunately not too much demand for us to release a radar-only pigtail, however, we're updating all of our products to have full 5/9/12V USB-C output and will try to release custom length cables for RJ11 or DC barrel plugs.

If you really wanna go all out, I'd install our upcoming USB-C parking mode adapter to the 5-pin domelight connector in always-on mode and another one to the 10-pin rearview mirror connector in ignition-activated mode to give you max flexibility!

I have read through this thread and was originally considering the OEM dash cam, but because it does not have a rear cam, I have been looking at other brands. I currently have a Thinkware U1000 2 channel and radar parking module installed on our 2022 Acura MDX. I had it professionally installed and was very hesitant to tap into the fuse block, further research I discovered that Thinkware made an OBDll connector which simply plugs right in to the OBDll port located drivers side under dash.

Why has nobody discussed or thought about doing this instead of an adapter? I am going to go this route on my LIMITED HYBRID once I verify with Toyota the compatibility. Seems hybrids donā€™t have any issues, but if you have a full EV you would need to go a different route?

Pros/Cons of using an OBDll connection vs. using an adapter?

Been tapped into the fusebox for over 10 years and not so much as a burned fuse. Thatā€™s four cars from three different car manufacturers. For wherever that is worth.

Having said that, if there is an easier and cleaner install, I wouldnā€™t mind knowing more about it. At this point Iā€™m still trying to decide if Iā€™m keeping my current 2 channel cam or upgrading when my taco lands.

@Tsturbo OBD power is a good solution! Also checkout the Garmin OBD unit which has very nice power electronics, timer mode, and low voltage cutoff protection on it: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/735279/pn/010-12530-23 Not all vehicle's OBD port has an ignition-switched power pin and I'm not 100% about the 4G Tacoma since I haven't explored this option yet but if I recall you'll need to use an OBD power adapter with timer or low voltage protection. If you go this route, please let us know how it works! I still love our solutions the most because you're putting the USB output exactly where you need it and get to avoid routing the wire.

So our unit is simply a power supply.

In the thinkware U3000 case, the power supply (OBD power adapter in your case) powers the front camera. The rear camera is powered from the front camera as it is daisy chained to the front. If your camera already comes with the OBD power adapter, it would make sense just to stick to that. Our new parking mode adapters would basically just replace the OBD power adapter but you're basically spending a little bit of money to route a couple less feet of wiring.

The use case for our products is that most cameras do not come with an OBD power adapter and rely solely on USB power to the cigarette lighter port, or car's built-in USB ports. These pretty much never allow power when the vehicle is off. Our new parking mode adapters totally support 2 channel dashcams and parking mode.. in your case, you aren't really gaining anything.

@Ruissimo @Tsturbo you can see my parking mode adapter prototype in action here:



Also forgot to say that our output is USB-C so you can run 5V/9V/12V devices from our port whereas the thinkware OBD adapter is 12V output. Garmin OBD output is 5V USB output. So the Dongar unit is the most flexible and allows you to disable parking mode on the fly i.e. if you park in a garage at night and don't need the extra wear on your battery, but might not matter for your use case.
