I found this aluminum fuel tank on Amazon. Paid $127. It holds 12 gallons, which is way more capacity than a person needs, I know. But it tucks under the rack nicely. I can fill it easily, it's securely mounted, and adding gas to my tank or even someone else should be simple. Let gravity do the work. What are your thoughts?

Very cool. I like it.
Only thoughts.. I’d be looking for an under-truck area to mount, then proceed to install an electric fuel pump connected to an Aux switch. But that’s just me. Good buy!

Just don't fill the stock tank above the full level. There's a closed vent system or some such technology in the fill spout.

Yes it's rated for gasoline. People who reviewed it used these (smaller ones) to replace plastic tanks on riding lawnmowers, tractors, etc. Some even put them on hot rods and other custom cars. The finish is a little rough for show in my opinion.

Good point on over filling, I would only transfer from spare to main tank if the main were nearly empty. This is more emergency use only, think Jerry can.

Evidently you are quite the explorer! I figured >500 miles of range would cover me between gas stations. (18 gallons stock + 12 gallons aux =30 gallons. 30 gallons x 18mpg= 540 miles)

Wow! Cool story. I agree an aftermarket auxiliary tank would be nice. This will have to do until then.

Pretty difficult to fill if it under the bed?

Not to be a downer, but do you really want to be sleeping near a large volume of raw fuel? Just an observation. On a related note, I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually develops an auxiliary tank which properly mounts within the frame.

As a FYI, I've used and would recommend rotopax, however they have a couple of drawbacks in my opinion based on my experiences with them.

1) Costly, overpriced in my opinion.
2) Neck deforms, well mine did - kept it full on my SxS, and at one point when I actually used it, the spout leaked because the neck deformed, seems to permanent, although I suspect could be fixed with one of those costly metal spout assemblies I'm thinking.

With the aux tank that far above your 18 gal. primary tank, obviously no fuel pump is required.

Here is my question Pappy. I am guessing you wouldn't go without a spare, where would you carry that? Would a 50 gallon tank like you see on work trucks carried in the box work? Then you'd have almost 70 gallons!

I'm sorry, but I can't justify a $2200 bumper and $1540 in swing outs. plus however much your yet to be released auxiliary tank will cost for 3 gallons of capacity. You will pay more just in sales tax.
