I changed the oil at 3k, 6k and 10k and took samples to send in for analysis.

Anyway, it seems like it has broken in nicely. After the break-in period wear metal levels have been coming way down.

Looks healthy. Seems like break in is complete somewhere around 15,000 miles on these.

Is their viscosity measurement correct? Anything below 6.0 cSt @ 100c is a little thin for 0w-20.

What is your driving style/use?

If Toyota 0w-20 is that thin after 3000 miles and you aren't drag racing, I think I'm going to switch to 3k mi oil changes. I've been doing 4k, and about to hit the 15k service.

What brand of oil did you use for these changes? I ask because of the Moly numbers. From what I’ve seen on new oil tests the OEM Toyota is formulated with higher Moly vs most all other oils including Mobil 1 which everyone thinks is the OEM oil (but it really isn’t)

The first sample came with the Tacoma new but the next two I changed were Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy.

Where did you get this tested?
Amsoil / Oil Analyzers

Interesting question. My 1st gen had 200k miles when I sold it for a small profit. I drive less than 10k a year though.

The question relates to the utility of oil change frequency and analysis tracking. I was curious if you were someone who keeps a new truck for 200k miles vs someone who trades/sells in 50k miles.

So I asked the dealer about the whole break-in period debate. I was told that they do a break-in period in the factory and that the truck gets delivered with it's first oil change already under its belt

@gpburdell It's my first new vehicle and I don't intend to sell as long as it suits my lifestyle. At my rate it will be 25 years before I hit 200k.

The 1st gen I treated like shit. It'd regularly be 18 months between $20 Jiffy Lubes. But that was a different, simple, resilient 2.7L engine. It had a cracked exhaust manifold ever since I owned it. I hit a few things, and a few things hit me and I just hammered out the dents. Several times it hauled a bed of concrete over 2 tons to the dump. At one point it lost all its oil when the filter fell off and drove until the engine seized up, BUT it started back up after cooling down and kept on running. Obviously the new engine in the 4th gen in a lot more sensitive, but its twice as powerful and more efficient.

That's what I told him, but he said they bench run it for the equivalent of a break-in period, then change the oil that they deliver the truck with šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
