I’ve got less than 1k miles on my 26 TRDOR & have noticed the mpg is reading really poorly. However, at my last fill up I showed that there was around 15 miles left on the tank as it was showing sitting on empty….except that when I filled it up, it only took 13.4 gallons, meaning that I had almost 5 gallons left in the tank still. When I filled it up, it says there’s only 251 miles on a full tank which would come out to less than 14mpg, but I’m currently reading 19mpg after the first quarter of the new tank.

can you do a hard reset on the distance left calculation?

Mine does this as well, it was driving me crazy this weekend when I was coming home from the mountains and debating how close to home I could get before running out.

My lifetime MPG in the computer was at 17.5.
Distance to home in the GPS was 55 when I started, and I had a range of 60 according to the computer.
As I drove, that 5 mile range surplus eventually turned into a 20 mile deficit, despite having a trip average in the low 20s.

Hopefully it gets better once the mileage gets higher; I don't recall having this extreme of an issue with my Land Cruiser, but when I traded it in at 10K+ miles, the range was dead-on

I have 11k on a 24 OR 6spd, range after fill up is ~310 miles. I have the bank's IDASH that offers fuel tank level in %, and the maximum tank level is always 93% when full. A week ago, I ran it down to 3 range miles, the idash read ~4% , and the tank took 15.8 to fill up. Average combined mpg is ~19.

This is normal. Was always that way, even on analog gas tank meters.

it’s purposeful to try to reduce probability of you running out of gas.

Also, running below 1/4 tank is hard on your fuel pump as it’s cooled by the gas itself.

When you hit 0 miles on your calculation (when the "Refuel" message pops up) you have ~2.7 gallons of gas left.

This.

The topic has been discussed before. The only thing one can do is to ensure that the truck is powered off during fueling (which is what resets the fuel tank level), and live with the fact that the truck is showing you miles to "E" which doesn't actually mean "out of fuel".

Forgive me, Ive killed lots of brain cells over the years. You said when "your" calculation. Do you mean when the "range calculation" on the vehicle dash hits zero there's 2.7gal left?????

It would be a miracle if people read or referenced their Owner's Manual.

Psssh, lol. I'm working on it but keep getting distracted on every rabbit hole. Thanks.

(Spent lots of time trying to save it to my iphone, so i could leave the actual one at home because it takes up to much space in my glove box,)

The estimate is a predictive model based on your driving. I took a road trip and filled up 6 times and since my MPG went to almost 28/gal the “miles to empty” was close to 400, which was actually pretty damn accurate.
About one fill up after I was back home it change back to its usual 320-350 “miles to
Empty”

I will say when I have 80-100 “miles left” I am not filling a full 18 gal. It’s usually 12-14 if I ever let it get that low, but as others have said it’s a Toyota thing and they don’t want you to run out

am I the only person that "just fills the tank when it's low" and doesn't use excel to track mileage?

With my Rubicon, I could change the diff ratio with a computer. I assume you could do that with Tacomas, but I've never done that with them. Otherwise, the mileage will be way off going from 3.58s to say 4.10s. Let me know what you do, and who in ABQ/Rio Rancho does that.

The predictive part is the easy part, knowing that when range counts down to zero you have 2.7gallons left is the majic.

Normal. All Toyota's I have owned do this.
