Anybody done a DIY sleeping platform ?

I'm getting ready to order a @Softopper for the summer and plan to do some bed camping.

I really like the BamBed, but don't love the price for what it is. Don't want something like the decked system because I want to be able to quickly remove it for hauling stuff.

Wondering if anyone has done any DIY sleeping platforms I may not have considered.

You shouold check FB Marketplace - people sell them all the time. I got one for free that someone had made for a 3rd gen and it fits perfectly. It was super ratty and gross, but I cleaned it up and it's great now.

Yea, I've been looking on FB. I'm kind of in the Taco hub of the PNW so stuff goes pretty fast on marketplace. Will definitely keep looking though.

I built this as a two piece across three 2x6 (maybe 2x8) planks. I used the biggest that fits. Two 3/4” plywood sheets. Measure out the shape of the bed and cut with a skill saw and multi tool. Wrapped with indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot. Really easy and cost only $170.

if I did it again I’d lay down adhesive to better secure the carpet and I’d use real marine grade carpet. But it works great for right now and I’ll redo the carpet

in a couple years.

$700 for 3 pieces of cnc cut birch is wild.

The platforms are nice, but I think I'd rather just use one of those inflatable mattresses that fit around the wheel wells. The majority of these trucks are crew cabs, I can toss a griddle and a cooler in the back seat. All the clothing I need for a week fits in a back pack which would sit perfectly on the passenger floor. Mabey I'm a minimalist but I don't see the need to pack my house to go boondocking. I've spent almost two weeks in my old 3rd gen Ram just sleeping on the back seat with a pad.


Unless you have a family, then bring a tent.

Yea I know! High price.

It will be me and my wife. She does a lot of work out in National parks and the air bnbs for a night or two are so expensive in those areas that it just doesn't make sense. If we didn't pay for those for a year or two we could buy a whole ass camper lol

My set up is more involved but if you have some woodworking skills it might give you some ideas. Having drawers under the bed allows you to store quite a bit of stuff and you can customize it any way you like to fit your needs. I have maybe $500 in this whole thing and that includes the slides and everything.

That's awesome ! Nice work man. I have some coworkers who have some good wood working skills, so I'm gonna get together with some guys and bring some ideas
