12V battery problems 24 TrailHunter

Driving a 2024 Toyota Tacoma TrailHunter.. Hybrid.. First 12v Battery dead at 18 months.. Noticed it because the Ultrasonic Collision sensors started throwing codes. Now checking the replacement battery (2 weeks ago) as the Ultrasonic front sensors started throwing codes again.. Guess what, Voltage at 12.1.. My driving is short 5-15 minute trips around town with occasional longer trip maybe once every couple of weeks.. i have heard that Toyota put alternators on certain models of Tacoma starting in 2025.. Toyota engineers are rather stupid to ignore this problem and let it occur in the first place.

Common problem reported with hybrids. Got a multimeter? I'd like to know what charging voltage is while running. Preferably both in normal and Eco Mode.

My theory is that charging voltage is reduced when in eco mode which combined with someone who tends to make short drives would cause premature battery failure. These trucks don't necessarily have an alternator but rather a dc-dc voltage converter.

But I don't have a hybrid and no one that has had issues has been willing to test it for me.

You’re correct. My ‘25 Trailhunter has an alternator.

So I checked the voltage yesterday, engine cold, after warning about Ultrasonic sensor showed up.. Voltage 12.1V. Today cranked up and ran some errands around town (maybe 15 min total) then came home and let sit in Ready Mode for 15-20 minutes.. Voltage now 12.73V.. Will check sitting over next couple of days to see about parasitic draw.. I have nothing added (Warn Winch, Rigid Lightbar on Prinsu Rack, and lights inside of AluCab Contour Canopy) that doesnt switch off when ignition off. And I dont have bed lights coming on when doors/ tailgate open..

Trickle charger, normal mode and/or a solar setup w/a charge controller. I use the solar setup, drive similar distances even less and resolved my starter battery issues. I have a ‘24 TH and yes not driving it enough you’ll get battery problems.my dealership swapped the OE battery. No issues since I became proactive about this. The vehicle is always parasitic draw on the starter in some fashion. To be expected
