When I first got my truck a bit over a year ago, I noticed when I went through touchless car washes that water would spit in through the sunroof. Didn't think much about it other than the high pressure of the water caused it, but rain would probably not get in because of no pressure. This weekend I was out in a rain storm and I can see water dripping into the passenger side rear corner of the sunroof with a fairly steady drip. Is that water being caught by some tray or channel and being routed out somewhere as i don't see any evidence of water anywhere in the roof? I'm having the dealership look tomorrow, but is there a chance that water has caused rust/mildew/mold as i have no idea how long it has been dripping in?

Interested in hearing what they find, mine doesn't leak to my knowledge, but I opened it by accident while it was frozen not too long ago and the front part seems to stick up a bit more than normal now..

Probably kinked a drain tube from the factory. Most people don't realize sun roofs aren't actually that water tight. They have a "gutter" where water collects and then drain lines that typically run through the roof, down the A-pillars behind the dash and to the ground. The majority of "leaks" in my experience have been because those tubes get clogged with debris, usually from parking under trees. Used to have to used compressed air in a friend's rig to blow out his drains because the tree he parked under used to "bleed" sap onto the roof every few months.

All sunroofs are prone to causing ‘leaks’. Primarily due to the drain tubes getting clogged with pollen. Just shoot some air through the tubes every year.

I know there are drain holes in the front corners of the sunroof “cartridge“ but I’m not sure if there are two in the rear corner.

I had a bunch of water intrude through the sunroof the last time it rained hard in SoCal. At that time I was parked in my driveway facing uphills. Dealer wiped the sunroof seals and roof where it contacts but pretty much told me no issue found.

I know there are drains in the front so I now park backwards facing downhill to make sure any water intruding drains through the front holes.

If you talk to them please ask them if there are drain holes in the rear.

Also, the rear sliding glass has a tendency to allow water in when sprayed from the driver side. I see water on the inside of the passenger side rear window. Check for water spots inside.

I’d love to see nice picture showing them, I’ve had a few sunroof vehicles now and never had an issue yet, but I’d love to preventatively keep up on it if I knew the locations of the drains

It's common to have both front and rear drain holes to my knowledge. They're typically pretty small and sometimes hidden. I'd love to take a pic but part of the reason I bought my truck is because it lacks one and I hate sunroof for just this reason. Glued a few shut over the years because once the rack has issues it's better to just seal them off since you can't open them to clean.

But here's a generic diagram of what I'm referring to for reference, it's the best I can do:

I think this is more of a seal issue than drain holes - due to fact I actively see water dripping into the sunroof chamber from around the glass while closed.

The front two are pretty easy to see. You can pour water and see them drain at the bottom. The rear (if there are any) is visibly blocked by the rail as far as I can tell.

Just FYI it is normal for it to drip past the Sunroof glass seal, it'll fall into that drain catch pan around the perimeter of the hole. Almost every car will do it but every Toyota I've owned does it for sure. That is the importance of verifying your sunroof drain is clear at every location by pouring a small cup of water into it when tilted (parked) at an angle that's enough to verify drainage is working OK. Parking under trees is the biggest issue as even when the leaves don't make it through the seals let enough dirt, debris, pollen, being carried by the inevitable water drips etc that will build up enough to clog a drain port.

You can buy an Amazon extended plastic bendy pipe cleaner and gently clean the drains if one is clogged. Just did it on my 5th gen 4runner a year ago that had one of the rears gunked up, my 3rd gen Sunroof cables were rusted shut from lack of cleaning/Sunroof use when I got it.

Don't let them clog or next it'll be a soaked and stained headliner you're fooling with, or worse if it can leak down a pillar and get into the electronic modules under the dash.

So... official word from dealership service dept: "sunroof does leak a small amount of water but it does have a drain system for the sunroof assembly. this drain is working properly at this time. no mold found at this time and system is working to spec" So I'm supposed to be ok with a leaky sunroof on a $70k vehicle and know possibly at some point that even with regular maintenance on the drain holes, they could potentially get clogged and cause much more damage? Would love a Toyota technician on here to weigh-in on this?

I use a length of thick weed whacker line, and check both front drains at least once a year.

So far so good, over nine years parked outdoors under tree cover.

I have experienced a leak on the passenger side front corner that dripped out of the sunglass store area. But like a ghost it was there and a few days later it was gone and hasn't appeared again ?

They're probably also lazy. Try the string trimmer method on all 4 lines. Just cause water can pass through doesn't mean it's flowing enough. If there a kink, probably won't let the string passed it but would still allow water.

This was where mine dumped out from. It was quite a bit of water too.
