I am thinking about buying a new Tacoma, specifically the 2026 Off-Road Hybrid version. I test drove three Tacomas, but not a hybrid yet. I started looking at used but then the options and trim kept creeping up and the price quickly approached new. They are discounting this one a couple 1000 and offering me good trade money. Do you think the hybrid is worth the extra ~$4000 for those who have been in this position? I realize I wouldnt make that up in gas for years but having the extra power and the inverter sure would be nice. We have a hybrid Rav4 that we have enjoyed for years.

I have the hybrid, the torque off of idle is crazy nice. Perfect for my slow wheeling. I'm not sure it does much for gas mileage, running around the house I'm averaging 18.5mpg right now, but I didnt get it for the gas mileage.

I worked at a Toyota dealer for a good while, used vehicles is where they make their money so gotta do some good arm wrestling. You can look at trade in values, plus another $1000 for running it thru their shop and that gives you a good Idea on what they own it for. That's the number Id start dealing at.

In some cases new are cheaper because depending on the vehicles you get a lower interest rate on a new vehicle especially if Toyota has incentivized financing.

Man, you kind of followed my buying path. Wanted the premium for the camera setup, wanted the inverter cause it's nice to have (saw some dude on youtube running an air fryer off it to cook frozen pizzas while overlanding.

I can't speak for others, just my experience with the hybrid engine. I have the boost and electric battery/motor gauges set up on my dash so i can see when they're engaging. The electric motor comes on less than you would think. Really at slow speeds where i'm slowly cruising between reds downtown, if i'm on a slight decline and doing small maintenance accelerator to maintain speed, and when if i really push down on the pedal the motor will whir up. When the motor really kicks in it kicks in to give you some extra torque on demand.

Waiting to break in the truck more before i really take it off-roading. But i imagine that extra torque is something to be mindful of when rock crawling, don't want to bounce the front end wheels spinning, suddenly catch grip, and snap an axel.

It does make the auto on-off more bearable. The truck REALLY likes to turn itself off at times and just cruise or rely on the electric motor for small maintenance inputs. But in stop and go traffic it will cut itself off at every full stop. The electronic motor makes up for it because it can inch the truck forward if you need it to, and during light-medium acceleration it'll rely on the electric motor for a bit and then restart the gas engine, vs having to restart the motor on the line when you let go of the brake.

should mention, expect 18ish mpg overall average for mixed use, but on the highway biased driving i can easily get 24 mpg.

I hadnt thought about it compenseting for the auto-start stop! That feature drives me nuts on other cars. Does the hybrid have a ECVT or actual 8 speed transmission? I would miss the storage under the seat but the rest sounds good. The price on used is crazy high and Toyota has 2.49+ financing right now.

8 speed. you can bypass the auto on/off if you slap the gear selector into S. but know it's not a true sequental gearbox in that mode, but a gear limiter, it just limits the max gear the transmission can use. if you do that and want to drive normally, click it up to 8. tow/haul mode also turns off auto on/off

i've just gotten use to it, i think most hybrid owners at least just live with it as is.

I wouldn't try to sway you either direction. I have a non-hybrid but have driven a bunch of hybrids. One thing that you may not consider is that the hybrid is much heavier and you lose the under-seat storage

Valid points both! Heavier would be better for towing probably, but the tow rating is lower and the payload is higher so not sure? Worse for offroad maybe? Worse for MPG but the hybrid part makes up for that. Dont the hybrids have some differences, like no starter?

i drove a hybrid and non, and it was night and day. you really need to drive the two choices in the same afternoon, even if one is from one dealer and the other is across town. don't let the salesmen give you a hard time, just speak very little and say you want to simply drive X or Y.

it's not like you're buying a pair of shoes, this is a major purchase, and you should go in eyes wide open to how each feels.

2025 Tacoma Limited Hybrid
I have 2025 Limited with the Hybrid engine. We just drove from the FL panhandle to North GA and averaged over 23 MPG. The hybrid Limited has AWD so it’s pushing the front gearing all the time. I’m glad I got the hybrid because it will run on all electric. In my neighborhood once I get up to speed (under 30 mph) and back off the pedal, it slips into EV and will stay there until I stop. Also, yesterday while stuck in Atlanta stop and go traffic, I went about 5 miles in EV because we never got over about 20 mph! These are the times the hybrid shines. I also noting while driving the hilly backroad it would shut the engine off while going down long down grades. Some times not starting again until it was a quarter way up the next grade. This was on roads posted at 55 mph and I was averaging 60 mph. It does do better without cruise in these conditions because will kick in and start the engine long before momentum slows the truck more than 1-2 mph, so working the go pedal yourself will keep it in EV much longer. It’s not like your RAV4 and won’t stay in EV as long as it will, but it does much more than I expected it would. We also have a 2025 Camry and it will stay in EV from the entrance to our neighborhood to our house, even with stopping at stop signs! If they had offered the Limited in 2WD with the Hybrid engine I would have gotten it instead, that configuration would probably get 30+ MPG! Living in North Florida, I don’t really need AWD, but if you want a Limited trim with the hybrid engine, that was the only available option! I would think a Sport with the hybrid engine would be capable of better gas mileage since it has less aggressive tires and part time 4WD.

I test drove a variety of Tundras, Tacomas, 4Runners, and Land Cruisers. Settled on the Tacoma Trailhunter, which is a hybrid. We tow a few days per month on and offroad and love the performance of the engine and the suspension. We also got it in a 6’ bed, which is great for camping. If storage and backseat might be a concern, I recommend you explore the Tundra as well as Tacoma.

If you tow I recommend picking a truck with a built-in brake controller. Toyota cannot add their system at the dealership.

Although I miss having under seat storage, I usually keep a 95L Roam box in the back of the truck, under a tonneau cover. The only drawback when you do have under seat storage is if you have anything in the backseat like we have our dog, it makes things hard to get to anyway.

Happy truck hunting. There are so many models, but you will figure out what you want as you explore these trucks.

Not sure how long you've been looking, but just keep your eye on the market and be patient, I bet you can find a used example at a decent price. They sold a lot of these trucks and they are beginning to come on the used market < 30k miles.

I used visor.vin and setup my search criteria within 300mi of my zipcode and would get updates the day a new one posted. I got very familiar with the pricing and trim levels (Wanted a TRD OR Premium), so when a good deal popped up, I jumped on it.
