So, I got some 17" wheels from a 5th gen 4Runner and they have TPMS sensors (or TPWS like Toyota says, not sure why they felt the need to flip the M upside down), but I can't get them programmed. I followed the procedure in the manual, it shows that it will discover them while driving. I've gone on 3 different drives of 1 hour each and still detected.

I'm wondering if they are compatible at all? 5th Gen 4 Runner is like 3rd Gen Tacoma.

Anybody had luck with these wheels?

It's likely that they are NOT compatible. When I had my Wrangler, I bought OEM wheels from a guy who's Jeep was one year newer than mine and the TPMS on his wheels was incompatible with my Wrangler, even though they were the same generation...

I purchased a set of winter tires from Toyota with Toyota sensors in them . Changed the tires out went into my gauge cluster and select set 2, drove approx 1/4km tires registered and never had an issue with them.

If it’s the screw on style (Silver nut next to valve cap) then it’s not compatible. Toyota switched to a new style of TPMS around 2021-2022 and those ones have the rubber valve stem and the sensor bolts to the back of the valve stem. Those ones seem to work off a different code then the previous ones. To my knowledge you still need a TPMS tool to program sensors to the truck if they are sensors that were not previously paired to the truck.

They are not compatible. 2017 4Runner is a Pacific T3 and the new Tacomas are a T6 or Denso 550-0106.
BTW the valve stem material has NOTHING to do with compatibility. They make the same protocol in both rubber and metal many times.
