It seems the common answer for oil filters for a 2024 Tacoma TRD Off-Road (non-hybrid) is part number 90915-YZZN1. My local Toyota dealership's parts department gave me a 90915-YZZD1 oil filter. Searching on Toyota's own parts and accessories site seems to yield the 90915-YZZN1 part number as well.

Before I make a trip back to the dealership, has anyone used the YZZD1 variant?

Maybe they just grabbed the wrong one off the shelf? I've been using N1s and I can't find any application guide that shows the D1 as being compatible with our engines. Would it thread on and seat? Yeah, likely. Would it filter oil? Sure. Are the internals the same or have the same bypass pressure rating? Hmmm maybe not?

Googling some pics of them shows one big physical difference to me - the inlet holes. The D1 uses round holes, while the N1 has elongated openings and that (to me) suggests that the N1 (might?) allow more oil flow than the D1.

Does this matter? Idk... that's your call. If it were my truck, I'd swap it for the correct N1. It's cheap insurance against expensive engine damage.

It's the wrong part, made for older engines. The D1 is for the older V6 engines. It's the wrong part and does not meet the spec. It's not a cross compatible filter. Sometimes filters have different thread lengths, different diameter mating surfaces where the gasket and the flange meet, so you can have issues. The big one is the metal piece where the holes (slots) are cut. On the D1 it protrudes slightly, but on the N1 it looks flatter. Bypass spring pressures can be different too since the D1 was meant for V6 and the N1 is for 4 cylinder engines.

This was a poor quality job of not checking the part numbers before installation. Of course, that means going back to the dealership, having them monkey with it. So this error is sucking your time away no matter how it gets remedied.

I would not run it.

Edit: I assumed you meant it was installed. I misread that the parts dept gave you the filter. Easier fix.
