Apologies if this topic has already been covered, but I'm considering replacing the tires on my new 2024 Tacoma Sport I-Force Max.


With only about 500 miles on the truck, Discount Tire has offered me $60 per tire for my factory-installed General Grabber tires as a trade-in toward a set of BF Goodrich All-Terrain KO 3 tires.


I understand the T/A tires may be a bit louder and provide a slightly firmer ride, but I believe the difference will be minimal. Please feel free to correct me if I’m mistaken.


I’m also considering upsizing the tires to 285/70R18, up from the current 265/65R18 General Grabbers.


I’m aware this change will affect speedometer accuracy.


My questions are:
– Will the larger tires rub?
– Has anyone here made a similar switch and ended up regretting it? I'd really appreciate hearing your experience.

Damn! They didn't offer me anything for my tires. I could've sold them for probably double that but I decided to donate them to help someone in need who was able to sell them for what 300 to someone in an older Toyota that had bad rubber. So that way I helped two different people out.
I hated those tires. To me they're deadly on wet roads.
Wet breaking, cornering, stopping on wet roads are my biggest concern with tires and I absolutely love the Cooper ROAD + TRAIL AT.
You can search for the threads for that or any other topic with the search option at the top right hand corner.
These tires rock and Cooper had a $60 rebate plus discount tire gave me another discount though I forget what it was.
They're also wet and keep me from spinning when I'm backing up a slight grassy hill into my parking spot at my house.
I had to use 4 x 4 with those generals to do the same thing I can do in 4 x 2 with these tires.

I never buy from tire rack because I can usually find better deals such as these Cooper's I bought from discount.

I’m running 265/70/18 KO3’s. Other than the weight, I have no complaints so far.
I was thinking about stepping up to the wider width 285 tires. Do you think that is unwise?

As far as the weight, are you more concerned with the mileage or steering or both?

I was able to sell my stock OR wheels and tires for $900 on Facebook Marketplace. That seems to be about the going rate.

I think it’s a personal decision for the larger size.

I am not really concerned about the weight. It is what it is. I took a hit on mpg but only 1 mpg on the tank average.

But the kool factor went way up.

As long as you are happy trading looks/capability for lower mpg. You might be surprised at how much your mileage drops.

That's a pretty big size jump so you may rub at stock height.

Your gearing will be off by 6.8% and your transmission will hunt for gears more on hills, or while loaded. Odometer will be off by the same amount. Speedo will likely be 3-4% high (they seem about 3% low stock). Fuel economy will take a decent hit since the truck will be in the boost much more often to move the larger and heavier tires.

Also, whatever you do, DO NOT get E-Rated tires. These trucks are too light for them and the ride quality will be noticably worse (my opinion, but I've made that mistake and won't do it again). C or D rated at most for LT-Metric tires, or XL rated if they are P-Metric.

BFGs KO3s aren't bad tires - plenty of people like them. I'm not a fan any longer in the PNW, but we have unique wet conditions and temperature ranges.

Depending on the tire, a 275/65R18 or 265/70R18 would be a smaller increase with much less impact. 275/70R18 would be about the most I'd go on stock suspension and with stock gearing. But plenty of people go larger (side effects be damned).

Edit: Another thought... your stock wheels are likely too narrow for 285 width tires.

Is this for looks or function? Lower profile tires for a Sport vs OR is a specific advantage or reason for that model. Putting big off road tires on a rig without lockers is still a disadvantage.

All the BFG series are great but you might want to consider the Trail Terrain model if you're after some sort of look and want to keep a better behaved highway tire. As much as that series is better for highway, my off road experience with them is good. I'm a trail builder and part-time ski area crew and found they were great.

With a whole lot of experience, I've just never liked a true or very much off road focused tire unless really needed.
