First, apologies for the long intro here. If you want, skip down to the dyno charts!
My name is Cameron, but everyone calls me Cam. For the last 18 years, I've been building and tuning Subarus ranging from 300-1100hp. While Subaru is where I started, I've recently shifted my interest back to off-road vehicles, which is where my love for cars began. My first car was a 1992 Jeep Cherokee, and I learned the hard way that water doesn't compress, which took a lot of overtime and long hours to fix during my college years.

Fast forward 25 years, and I've been spending much more time in the outdoors with my children, who are now between 12 and 21. We enjoy fishing, camping, running, and hunting all over the Southwest.

When I learned that Toyota had finally put a turbo engine in the Tacoma, it seemed fitting that I should get one as it fits my current lifestyle much better than a 1000whp Subaru WRX. When I learned that Cobb Tuning was going to support the new 2.4L turbo, I couldn't wait to get to tuning mine. I've been a Cobb Protuner for Subaru and Mitsubishi for well over a decade, and believe they offer the most complete and mature tuning solutions for the platforms that they support.

My approach is this- offer the best service and safe tuning solutions, while being available to my customers or potential customers. I'm eager to see where this new platform goes, and will be publishing results from my own personal development truck as well as customer trucks along the way. If any aftermarket parts companies want unbiased, real world dyno results, please reach out. I have unlimited access to our dynojet, and would be happy to help. If any Tacoma owners have questions about how tuning works, what the parameters are, and how to monitor them on the Accessport, please ask.

Now, on to the pics and dyno charts!

The day I brought it home. My first Tacoma, but one of many in a long line of turbo 4 cylinder vehicles.

Installing the Cobb Accessport- Exciting day. I've been a Cobb Protuner for over 12 years and believe their software is among the best anywhere.

Dyno day! Did some pulls on the stock file locked in 4th gear on 91, and then started custom tuning, focusing first on the awful oem fueling curve. Then kept at it until I was happy with the curves. The gains were really impressive and the truck feels phenomenal. The shifting is so much better with the transmission tuned as well. I remapped the throttle to make it much more responsive, which really changes the driver experience.

My 9 second WRX Wagon that I still have and drive, just because I know there are some Subaru people on the page!

Did some quick E30 testing. Only a few dyno pulls since I was short on time, but showing huge potential.

Awesome! We (my wife) have a ‘24 Subaru Outback Wilderness, which, if others don’t know is turbocharged. Wife has been building it out and put Pedal Commander on it, which has lessened the horrible shuddering when coming to a stop and when auto stop is either turning the motor on or off. It is also opened up the power a bit…not bad for $250 but a tune would be better.

I feel pretty strongly about the tune because OTT recently tuned my ‘25 Tacoma. Once I have a little more experience running the tune I will be posting about it on the appropriate thread. Absolutely love it.

Please help us get our Subaru tuned if anything can be done for that poorly functioning CVT.

How much different would you say your custom tune results are vs the OTS maps that come with the Cobb AP?

Those are really nice cars. My wife owns a 2020 Ascent, which is the same FA24 and CVT. Ours is tuned on an Accessport and the power delivery is much smoother and the power is significant over stock. I have the ability to mimic what the pedal commander does for the throttle in the tune, and add real power through fuel, tune and boost adjustments. The CVT does not have any tunable parameters, however I've found that once you correct the power delivery, the CVT issues are greatly reduced. Shoot me a PM if you'd like to discuss getting your Outback dialed in!

Great question! I did do some pulls on the Cobb map the same day that I did the baseline on the stock map and my custom mapping. My custom tune made a significant amount of power (nearly 30whp at peak) vs the Cobb OTS map, and that is usually the case across all platforms- remember I've been tuning with Cobb software on Subaru and Mitsubishi for 18+ years . The OTS map is designed to be safe for every truck at every elevation. I'm at 5300', and the factory atmospheric pressure compensations for load control are not perfect. You may not need to touch these at sea level, but at elevation, really dialing in these types of tables can make a big difference.

My SXTH Element intake and intercooler will be arriving next week, and I'll be testing the intake on stock tune and custom tune, then adding the intercooler and do the same testing with the combo.

Right on! Would like updates on your build.
My SXTH Element intake and intercooler arrive tomorrow. I'll be posting dyno results for the intake on a stock tune, then with the same tune that made 309whp to get a good reference for how much difference the intake makes on stock tuning vs custom tuning.
Then I'll install the intercooler, go back to stock tune for those numbers, and then reload my tune to see what the intercooler does.
Once that data is collected, I will tune truck and see if I can take advantage of the lower boosted air temps from the larger intercooler.
All of this testing will be on 91 octane.

I had an outback XT which is the same engine your wife’s car has, and it feels much better with a transmission anti wobble insert and a Cobb engine brace, way more responsive

Good news! I hope we will have a chance to try to install the anti wobble answered this weekend. We discussed an engine brace but decided to try the anti wobble on its own to see what that feels like.

You will really like the sounds from the SXTH intake. Makes the truck so much fun to drive hearing the turbo more

I keep refreshing the UPS tracking page. Love me some turbo sounds!
