IMHO, there is no such place. The warranty that comes with a new vehicle is more than adequate.

If you can afford a Limited, you can afford to take the small chance that it would pay to apply the added warranty. Those places that sell extensions do the odds similar to what the Casinos do. You would be financially better off to walk past a Casino just like taking a hard pass on an extended warranty.

If you can't afford the chance on not taking an extended warranty, you most likely should not have purchased such a high dollar vehicle.

Just my two cents.................

Any money i might have spent on extended warranty (for any type of purchase) has usually gone into my retirement fund.

I almost went back to my trade-in when dealing on my '24 because the extended warranty was pushed so hard citing all the electronics and other technology. Ultimately I passed on the extended warranty for the '24 just like I had on the 6 new Toyota's I'd purchased over the years. Time will tell....

Once again, the warranty companies are "in the weeds" with all of that information and they take a risk in that just like the consumer. The only difference is that they will come out ahead more times than not. That is their bread and butter so to speak.

I look at it this way. You most likely will have full coverage on a newer car anyway and you are enjoying the full warranty for 3 years. On average, many people dump their car and trade it in and start all over after 3 years with the intention of keeping it longer. The warranty companies are essentially getting their money and never needing to pay out in the long run when you do trade it in.

Oh, and if you decide to keep your vehicle for 10 years, you have paid a considerable amount for the warranty so you really are not gaining much anyway? The chance that you come out ahead would be so remote. Alternatively, if you do pay for the extended warranty, you are certain to pay out more in the end.

IMO, the risk that you take is so small and that is why I can sleep well at night.

The dealership finance teams sole job is to make as much money as possible and that’s by tacking on extended warranty to buyers with fear mongering or extreme pursuance.

agree with others, save the money you would spend on the warranty and use it for repairs if that does happen. Considering Toyota’s are one of the most reliable cars on the planet, the likelihood of extended warranty claim is very low. Of course if you feel the need for piece of mind then by all means go for it.

After owning my Trailhunter for a year, I decided to max out my Toyota warranty to 10yr/125K (given I love my truck 😀). I purchased this from Troy below. The cost was substantially less than what the dealer wanted at the time of purchase.

Unless something expensive breaks between 60-125k miles. Then it has paid for itself. Non zero chance of that happening even on a "Toyota"

What you essentially have now, is an extension of the 5 year 60K mile warranty to add another 5 years and 65K for the power train. (the most needed IMHO)

Now take the amount that you paid for the warranty and invest it with an average return of 7%.

If you invested $1,000 today, in 5 years it would be around $1,500.

Now before you say an investment isn't a guarantee, I could say a repair is not a guarantee as well. I am just using averages. :)

When I searched: average life of powertrain toyota tacoma in years and miles before repairing

This is the result of said search:

A Toyota Tacoma's powertrain often lasts 250,000 to 300,000+ miles, translating to 20-25 years, with many owners hitting 300k or even 400k miles with regular maintenance like oil changes, spark plugs, and rust prevention, thanks to its durable engine and components designed for tough conditions. Major repairs are less common before 200k miles, but consistent care and addressing wear quickly are key to reaching these high numbers.
Expected Lifespan & Mileage
  • Miles: 250,000 to 300,000+ miles is a common expectation for the powertrain. Some reports mention reaching 400,000 miles or more.
  • Years: This mileage usually equates to 20 to 25 years, depending on annual mileage.

And large portion of owners will trade their truck in for the latest and the greatest before hitting those miles. The extended warranty I guess helps them sleep better at night.
