It is time already to replace my OEM battery. Any suggestions for a larger size that will fit the tray? The tray has a removable sheet metal piece that seems to limit the size that fits. Anyone try this?

I wanna go with the Optima orange top lifepo but not clear on whether the alternator will charge it or if I need an external charger.

The following document might be of help.

The attached lists battery cases by group number, CCA rating, physical size and displays their post locations.

Battery Council International (BCI), authored the doc; they are a trade organization for batteries in the US.

I’ll admit that the Optima Orange Top QH6 lithium battery sounds interesting. I’ve worked with lithium batteries in a lot of other applications including E-bikes, RC cars, computers and so on. In most cases they have a lot of advantages. However, the charging requirements, heat cycling and peak temps make me leery of putting a lithium battery underhood. Most lithium batteries are designed to operate best when kept between 60-95 degrees F. Under hood temps are regularly far outside these parameters. Outside temps where I travel can get into the teens and up into the triple digits. This alone surpasses typical lithium battery temp recommendations without the engine running next to it. So my question is, what has changed in lithium battery chemistry to allow the vast temp differences?

I'm starting to think the Orange Top is more of a lightweight racing battery designed to be chassis mounted and charged externally, not onboard. The Optima charging warnings would dictate that it really can’t be safely charged with a traditional alternator system in the temperatures regularly found under hood.

Of course the 5-year warranty vs the Yellow Top 3-year warranty is certainly a confidence booster. Yellow Top batteries generally last me 7-plus years. So I guess I’ll need to see the Orange Top beat that for the near $500 premium over a comparable Yellow Top.

Anyway, the Yellow Top DH6 is the standard replacement and the DH7 is the upgrade.

That is helpful. Thanks!

Costco has a great deal on a Good brand. You can buy Two $180 ones for the cost of a Optima!

At least by me, their warranty is prorated. Even if it isn't, at 36mo it's pretty short compared to other batteries I've looked at.

You should be able to replace the OEM battery with a group H7/94 size. That is what came in my 2025 TRD Off Road. Standard battery is a flooded lead acid type. An AGM in the same size would be the next upgrade, which , of course the Yellow Top is. You should do fine with any quality AGM in group H7.

The EverStart Platinum AGM Battery (Group Size H7) features a 4-year free replacement warranty. If the battery tests as defective at a physical Walmart Auto Care Center within this timeframe, they will replace it at no charge. [1]

Walmart has the best "FREE" replacement period of 4 years on the Group size H7. At $189 it's probably the best deal out there. Or you can buy an Optima yellow top or Odyssey for about
double that price and have supposed best reliability with a 3 year , lesser free replacement period.
Personally I would go with the longest Free replacement period at the lowest price no matter who
makes the battery.

Yes, but I was specifically replying to Costco's Interstate batteries. Their price is good but warranty is crap (three years, prorated). I go with Walmart batteries because of their warranty and there's always a Walmart close by in the US.

You are correct and I agree. That's why I posted about the Walmart 4 year free replacement warranty vs the Costco 3 year pro-rated warranty. A 3 year pro-rated warranty is absolutely crap.
It's practically no warranty at all. And the funny thing is, the Costco interstate AGM and Walmart Ever Start AGM are probably made by the same company ( Clarios or East Penn, or Hankook in South Korea).
But I'm thinking if Walmart is willing to replace for free for 4 years, then they are gambling that those AGM's are going to last beyond the 4 year period so they DON'T have to eat a warranty claim.
And Walmart isn't a gambling type of company with their suppliers. They know exactly what they are specifying from vendors to stock their shelves with.

Good replies guys. I bought a battery tester and also put a slow charger on my battery overnight. The truck had been used only on weekends for a couple months, and the battery seemed weak. The tester confirmed that the battery was in good shape, and after using the slow charger, the battery has been fine for the last week or so. I'll buy a new battery (Everstart AGM looks like a good deal, or MAYBE a yellow top) at the first sign of any weakness of the OEM battery, but I think that the sitting was the cause. I would think driving it a few hours every weekend would be enough to keep it charged, but I guess not. These trucks certainly have some parasitic drain due to the wifi connection, ect so maybe that is the way it is these days.
