On a roadtrip with my 2024 Tacoma OR manual transmission.

Lost the ability to shift into gears 2, 4 and 6.

At a dealer now to see what they can do, appears to match TSB T-SB-0058-24 exactly.

Doubt they'll be able to fix it before I have to drive home across the country, this truck has really been a nightmare!

TSB attached.

If I may ask; how many miles did you have when this happened? Any warning signs in hindsight? Do any offroading etc?

Fellow 6MT owner within the TSB range.

This is @ about 33k miles and I have done quite a bit of off roading.

The only thing I'd noticed in terms of shifting previously was that occasionally I'd have a hard time shifting into reverse and first, few times I'd get stuck in a halfway position where the gear was only partially engaged.

Turns out the dealership is going to be able to replace my entire transmission free of charge tomorrow, so best case scenario for me there.

It worries me that it can happen so late. I don't drive too often nowadays and I'd hate for it to happen to me outside of warranty. Also, since I don't commute with it my offroad miles are a higher percentage of miles for me (and rougher on the trans I'm assuming). I haven't had an issue with getting into first; maybe reverse once in a blue moon but going into first and back out would fix the issue (happens on my other manual car too).

God speed getting it sorted...what did they change I beat the snot out of my 3rd gen manual zero issues....
They changed the shifter assembly because the I4 engine is mounted further forward from the driver and so you need an extended shifter housing to put the shifter in the right spot in the cab's console area. If you didn't have that, the shifter would be in the dash.

The third gen doesn't have the same style housing with a rail in it that can crack so it's not an issue there.

The two transmissions themselves from the two different generation trucks are almost identical aside from ratios. It is the extraneous stuff that adapts them into the truck (shifters, bellhousing, clutch setup, etc.) that makes them different. it is one of those items that is failing in this case. The transmissions themselves are equally durable.

It's unfortunate but not a life ending issue. You'll get the new transmission and it will be fine. Having that issue on top of a slew of other issues sure sucks though.

What I don't understand, is why their fix for the TSB is a new transmission. It is the extended shifter housing that cracks. They didn't update the transmission part number with the TSB (always been 33030-04080), so I don't know why a new transmission fixes the problem. That said, I have not seen a single failure happen outside of those first 3 months or so in 2024 that were pre-TSB that failed. So it seems like the fix has held up.

If it were mine and this issue happened to me out of warranty, my first attempt at a repair would be a new shifter housing. If the replacement housing also cracked, then I would assume the root cause is internal to the transmission and would probably feel the need to get the replacement transmission for a long term fix.

Sorry to hear that. What’s your build date? Mine is 5/24 and I’m in the VIN range for this TSB, 80k km and no issues thus far…

You can still drive it home.

I drove mine like that for over a month before the new transmission came in.

This is one of the reasons I bought the manual Tacoma, even with the TRD Sport, the rear axle is larger and built along the Trailhunter and TRD Pro drivetrain.

Meh. 9.5” is cool (I have the 8.2” on my SR) but I wish the 4.30s were lower. With 34” tires I barely use 5th and never use 6th. It just boosts constantly. I’m waiting for the 8.2” 5.29s to be available. It does drive pretty dang good in 4th though for the time being and gets good mpg despite being at 3100-3500 rpm at the speeds I drive.

When it was all stock I used all gears. My tires are much heavier and the height doesn’t help either.

Well, I got a new transmission and all my gears back-- only problem is my reverse camera no longer works 🤦‍♂️.

I guess they forgot to reconnect something?

Forgot to plug in the backup light switch. Passenger side.
