Anyone have a recommendation for a simple to install OBD port transmission temp reader or blue tooth + app type of thing?

Related question. I keep seeing that the Tacoma transmission temps run high (see TFL toaster test) and yet the truck doesn’t throw codes and is meant to run high. Does anyone know why that is? Does Aisin use oil that can handle it? Or is it just cost cutting / shitty transmission cooler?

following, (other than the tran temp gauge in the gauge cluster, be curious what you come up with)

My big curiosity is whether toyota is cutting corners and betting people won’t need a transmission longer than 150K miles or toyota is smart and knows what they are doing — or if the temps don’t actually get very high for most people

Carista has this functionality as well.

I think you can view transmission temp in the instrument cluster, eh?

The Care Care Nut on Youtube talked about these higher temps and he says it's because modern fluids handle them just fine.

Do you recommend any particular Carista / OBD2 version
Either works the same (no extra features or anything) the upgraded version just has wider support for other vehicles. That being said, I did buy the evo.

One thing I noticed is that my transmission is now starting the day warm - first noticed on the dash - now carista confirms it’s 100 degrees on cold start after sitting overnight .. how is this possible?

Scangauge II or III will do it. The 3 will be more plug and play. The two costs less.

That temp is way too hot in that video for any sustained use. First, if you're consistently towing 6k, you bought the wrong truck. Second, the transmission fluid is way hot and will have its life profoundly shortened by that kind of towing.

The Toyota WS ATF is nothing special. If anything, its a worse performer than a synthetic. But even the synthetic will get that hot since the oil doesn't have some magical cooling properties.

I was interested in monitoring transmission temperature as well, especially considering the recent possible issue of heating while in 4WD in mild off road conditions. I have tried the carista, but I wanted something that could be view on carplay. After trying a few different devices and apps, I found one combination that worked:

Device - OBDLink MX+
App - Car Scanner ELM OBD2

I tried OBDLink MX+ with their free app (OBDLink), can't be viewed on CarPlay
I tried Carista device and app, cant be viewed on CarPlay
I tried both of these devices with OBD Fusion, can't read transmission temperature, even tried custom PID equation, no luck

With Car Scanner ELM OBD2, setup custom screen with nine (9) different sensors, all on screen on the 14" display, dont have to scroll down like with 10 sensors on the display.

Currently I'm watching:

Battery Voltage
Alternator Output
Coolant Temp
Oil Temp
ATF Pan Temp 1
ATF Pan Temp 3
Intake Air Temp
Charge Air Cooler Temp Bank 1 Sensor 1
Catalyst Temp Bank 1 Sensor 1

Anyway, I couldn't find current info for 2024 Tacoma, so I thought I would share.

This setup works great for my 2024 TRD Off Road Premium

My transmission fluid is usually low 200s but I’ve seen it hit 220 or so.

From some generic AI searching it seems that as long as the transmission fluid temp is below 225 it should be fine. I do wonder if the high temps might shorten the fluid life or if there is a good way to tell when it really needs changed.

If you're in Houston, you could well be like my observation when our summer weeks stayed hot and warm in the evenings. The dashboard display showed temperature way before other times of the year.

Overall this is not something I worry about. My pickup has been task and work oriented. I just did summer conditions towing 5000 pounds over about 240 miles of climbs, some poor roads, and some bits unpaved. The temp gauges and all were fine when there was a lot of boost, and low MPG. It was February, but I spent a month and 3000 miles in CO pass climbing and back country sports access without problems.

I also don't get the worries many have when I consider the competition and realities of choice. My situation needed a minimum 6 ft bed pickup. The competition is full of known transmission problems. The Tacoma really only has the early run TSB as a problem and not yet any broad recalls, and a lot seem daft to the matter of how the Tacoma outsells its direct competition. Of course some Tacoma problems have to be out there when their sales kill it against Rangers, GM and Nissan.
