Good day all, I need to get together four or five people with brake controller issues on 4th generation Tacoma's. Toyota has omitted the connection point for the 7 pin trailer plug, and, you cannot install an OEM controller after the factory. After market controllers must be cut into the factory wiring beside the rear passenger seat. This is unacceptable for a vehicle sold with a "tow package" I have already filled a complaint with the competition bureau but plan to go to the media in Jan, my vehicle was sold as rated to tow 6400 lbs. and this cannot occur without a brake controller, false and misleading advertising plan and simple. I have followed this up as far as the CEO of Toyota Canada office, they clearly know there is a problem and would prefer I went away :)

Best of luck, I'm hoping for either a better aftermarket or an OEM solution to my lack of controller in the future. When I bought my truck, I did so knowing it didn't have a brake controller. It was the only option it didn't have that I wanted, but even then it was still a month long wait. I had mistakenly assumed the addition at a later date would be simple and relatively inexpensive at the Dealer. I was mistaken.

Frankly I only really have two complaints about my truck. The lack of good truck noises (4 bangers just don't sound good) which I knew, and the complete lack of ability to add oem options after arrival. Typically all harnesses and/or hardware are there just capped off, not outright missing. It's cheaper and easier to install a single, identical harness on all trucks and only utilize required circuits.

What is that?

Were you aware of the brake controller issue before you bought the truck?

"my vehicle was sold as rated to tow 6400 lbs. and this cannot occur without a brake controller..."

Why not buy a Curt in-line controller and call it good?

The harnesses may be there, but that doesn't mean it's plug & play. GM's have the connections in place, but you cannot add an OEM brake controller after the fact. They refuse to update the programming appropriately. However, they do a pretty good job of building in connections for aftermarket controllers. That's where Toyota really dropped the ball on this one.

Sure I could cut into the factory wiring on my brand new truck, but why do I have to do it? They dropped the ball here not me, if you sell a vehicle rated to tow 6400 lbs you require the brake controller, period, the truck has a "tow package" which includes all the usually including the 7 pin connector so where is the brake controller connection? Apparently none existent so plan and simply false advertising, even more so when you consider Toyota advise against the use of an after market controller in the owners manual

If you live in Canada and have encounter the problem when I approach the media, which will be in Jan the more the merrier, the core of my post was top find 5 Canadian Tacoma owners frustrated by the brake controller issue.

You didn’t know this before buying the truck? Or you just like to make significant purchases and then cry the blues.

Look you spend that kind of money on a vehicle I know I at least expect it to function as advertised, not crying the blues, demanding service, there is difference. I know it is a widespread issue and complete BS for everyone

You should have bought the trim that had the brake controller. Then there’d be no issue. Didn’t you know that when you bought the trim that you did? šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø Stop making a you problem an everyone else’s problem.

That's my point. You plug the Curt Echo brake controller into the truck's connector, and connect your trailer wiring to it. You make the settings on your phone, and you're good to go.

That should be easier than taking on the Toyota legal division.

Stop trolling. Contribute to the conversation or stay quiet, please.

At 60+, I’ve owned more trucks than I can easily count. Everynone, from every manufacturer, had a connector under the dash tomconnect an aftermarket wiring harness. It would never occur to me to confirm my 2025 tow-ready truck did not have one.

I’m just lucky that the Taco on the lot that I got had the factory brake controller.

Iā€˜m guessing you’ve never worked in customer service in your lifetime. Sadly there’s people who buy things, and then realize they bought the wrong thing and have buyers remorse, and take it out on toyota Canada or the competition bureau. I’m merely trying to save some poor customer service agents by asking people to reflect on who’s fault their problem is.

I'm not aware of any Tacoma have the brake assist prior to the 4th gen Tacoma and my 2nd gen w tow pkg is only to keep the Taco from overheating. (Trans cooler, etc)
