my 24 TH (20K miles) has had a stutter/ almost stall when executing a slow Left hand turn (traffic control light), stopped for traffic to clear turning left. It is not always consistent but enough to be worrisome. Took to dealer for 20K mile service and told them about problem.. Response from tech was that truck has a lot of extra weight and it is a transmission problem (he said that it was too heavy because I have a camper top on back- actually an AluCab Contour Canopy which added mybe 50-70 pounds over the the TH rack that was taken off). Wheels and tires added maybe 20 pounds over OEM, Prinsu rack on Cab added about the same as OEM Toyota rack and CBI sliders added 20 pounds over OEM sliders. CBI front bumper with Warn winch added less than 100# to front). So all totaled probably less than 200# over factory..
Is anyone else having problems and is this a ā€˜tranmission’ problem? It feels and sounds like engine problem, but technician blew me off. Their suggestion was to add a tranmission cooler ( for a tow ready vehicle, should have been built in).

Thoughts?

I'd go to a scale and get a total weight of the vehicle. Start getting your ducks in a row, in case something expensive fails, you have some documentation to back up your case.

x2 on the right hand turn question. That would really help nail down the issue. Is the power steering getting overstressed maybe?

I read that someone had some stuttering and it turned out the charcoal canister was full of fuel after overfilling? It was sending raw fuel into the engine instead of just vapour. Apparently, it doesn't take much to overfill 4th gens?

It's happen to me a few times in 6 months. My only extra weight is tires about 15lbs/tire. From a stopped position turning either left/right and taking off slowly. There is a 1 second stutter, but never turns off. ICE engine on, but hybrid hasn't kicked in to help. Feels like the truck is trying to take off in 3rd or 4th gear and not enough torque in low rpm.
I haven't notice it while driving in Sport mode.

Got a similar problem with my truck, though I don’t notice it so much when turning. It occurs more between the 1-2/2-3 shifts at speeds less than 20 mph or with light throttle between 40-45. It feels like it’s about to stall because it’s holding on to too high of a gear. The problem is never present in Sport mode. I’m wondering if the stock trans tune relies too much on the electric motor to fill in the power gaps instead of kicking down a gear when it should. Had it inspected at the dealership and they claim everything checks out. If Toyota would push a revision to the stock tune it would probably fix it.
