I did not know this was in the works

Rep Thomas Massie:
The right to travel is fundamental, but the government has mandated a kill-switch in new vehicles sold after 2026.
The kill-switch will monitor driver performance and disable cars based on the information gathered.

Why does George Orwell's 1981 come to mind?
It's not the beginning. Just one more thing on top of others to get us to that 1981.

The bill failed to pass
Maybe we'll get an executive order banning it, which might then get voted into law by Congress.

Probably obvious to most but just wanted to add that when bill was not passed, that left the kill switch on the table.

Actually it is in the works, they just aren’t calling it a “kill switch”. The AP article you linked was in response to potentially exaggerated social media posts.
The 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Section 24220) does require that all new vehicles by 2026 include advanced impaired driving prevention systems. While the law doesn’t use the term “kill switch,” it allows for automated vehicle disabling, depending on how the tech is interpreted and implemented.
Rep. Thomas Massie introduced an amendment in Nov 2023 to defund the kill switch mandate, and it was voted down meaning the kill switch-style system is still on track for 2026, unless future legislation stops it.

In the bill “advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology” is mandated by 2026 and must:

“passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired; and prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if an impairment is detected”

Not to necessarily stir the pot, so to speak, but the bill in the earlier link is an "appropriations" bill. Funding for the technology, not implementation for manufacturing. The NHTSA proposal, under timeline, only says more research is needed.

Just saying.
My understanding is while the earlier linked bill is an appropriations bill as you said, that the actual mandate for the impaired-driving technology (what people are calling a “kill switch”) is in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, Section 24220 — a separate, binding law.

The document you linked does in fact state more research is needed, meaning at best implementation would/will be delayed, not cancelled.

That being said unless Congress repeals or rewrites Section 24220, this tech will still legally required to be in new cars.

I am no legal expert, so if I’m wrong I apologize. Definitely not trying to stir the pot or give people inaccurate information. But I don’t want a nanny. MAXX075 you can have mine:)

Crazy. It is amazing what the government DOESN'T get involved in (to presumably save lives) but then spends time and tax payer dollars on something such as this. Just seems there are SO MANY other things that should be tackled first.

The last thing my truck needs is even more nannies. We get into arguments all the time. lol

My wife's SUV has that attention monitor bs and when I drive it wearing dark sunglasses it freaks out. Constantly beeping and commanding me to look at the road. I shout back, I am looking at the freaking road you piece of crap.

I can see this bs going really wrong and making your vehicle practically undriveable. I guess that is one way to reduce accidents.
