Though I have not used oiled airfilters on my Tacoma I had one on my 6.7 powerstroke. So this is how I would service the filter first of all 30,000 miles as an interval is purely a suggestion and I would strongly recommend inspecting the filter at a minimum every time you change your oil. Depending on driving conditions you may need to clean your filter multiple times per year. When I lived in El Paso we had sandstorms and afterwards I would be cleaning my airfilter so I would end up servicing mine about every 3-4 months. It is important to note that the fine particles are captured by oil on the filter and once the oil has become fully saturated with particles it will no longer filter incoming air and will allow particles into the engine. So regular inspections and cleaning is critical for your filter to work properly.
How I always cleaned mine was to start with a bucket of warm water and mild dish soap then gently worked the filter through the water using a soft brush to dislodge any of the more stubborn bugs from the filter. Then rinse apply the K&N cleaner to remove any remaining oil and allow to fully dry then simply follow the directions for applying the oil to the filter. The washing with soap first will save you wasting a ton of the K&N cleaner unnecessarily on road grime. Hopefully this useful to someone have a good day!

I just ordered an extra one from my dealership the other day for around $96, he said it will take around a month to get it as they are backordered.

If you are like me and looking to get rid of the high desert air-intake (snorkel) because of how annoyingly loud it is with windows down, I figured it out. I spend too much time in the mountains or out on desert roads with the windows down and the intake noise made my wife and I roll the windows up. Not anymore!

You need 2 parts and 4 clips to convert the Trailhunter airbox to route like the TRD Pro airbox:

PTR03-35241-AE - Taco Coupling Kit (This is the red elbow for the front intake basket and the red cap that will cap the port being used by the high-desert intake)

17752-AK010 - Inlet, Air Cleaner (this is the inlet basket that hooks up to the red elbow and clip in above the front radiator support)

90467-07217 - clips (4 needed to clip in the inlet)

The work is pretty straightforward/intuitive and should not need any instructions. I think their are some YouTube videos out there from other aftermarket intakes that would show you removal. The only 2 bolts are the 10mm bolts holding the rubber elbow that connect to the high-desert intake in the fender.

I cannot say enough about how happy I am with this mod and being able to keep everything factory. Windows down is enjoyable again! I also did not realize how much of the intake noise you actually do hear with the windows up. Just got used to that over the 20K miles, but now it is weird for it to be gone.

Different question on these filters. Is it normal for some oil to be seeping out of the air filter at the bottom of the air box housing? I assume these filters are oiled so maybe that’s just what they do. But it concerns me because I’d like to oil it back up again, if that makes sense. But I am not sure how to do that and I don’t trust the dealer. If anyone has tried let me know.

Was yours pre-oiled? And is the TRD pro filter a nightmare to remove as well? I honestly don’t even know how to separate the housing far apart enough to get the filter out. Besides the sensor wires that don’t permit you to pull them too far apart, the hosing doesn’t flex at all.

If I ever figure it out I’ll make a YouTube video.

I just went out and looked and it does looked pre oiled to me as it's still wrapped in the plastic it came in. I just did my 5K oil change last weekend and tried to take a look at the air filter while the oil was draining and it was a PIA to move the cover out of the way after you unlclip it. I couldn't really do it as those sensor wires are tight and doesn't allow much play. I think you need to loosen and/or remove the red tube in order to get better access. I don't plan on replacing mine until the 10K oil change.

@lauren01 sent me a good YouTube video that shows how you detach the sensor. I’m at 20K miles and you guys have me worried that I need to swap it out.

They are ROUGH to remove and put the cover back on, but you'll get it with some muscle, the new OEM filter did come oiled.

Oh shit - I just realized that toyota sent me a video of their inspection and they DID check the engine air filter — it’s “still good” — they just messed up the documentation.

Will check it anyway when I get a new filter.
