Hate to hear that brother. Hopefully others can stay clear of them from our experience.

I really want their bed stiffeners, even though they want a premium for them,
theyre on top right now on my list, asthetically....
but with all this drama, makes me think twice...

Bummer to hear the mishaps from this rack, which I had only happened to come across this thread in some other research I was doing.

I had actually just received today my order from them purchased in July with their current 6 week lead time. Was going to document the whole install as I'm finding with a handful of brands that directions seem like a far afterthought. Whether someone is an experienced mechanic or beginner, instructions should be clear and easy to follow. Even on uptops website, there are no links in their instruction page for the Kilo rack. I only found the youtube install video through some searching.

But back to the OP topic and to help everyone get a more accurate update of quality control. I'll try and get some close ups of all the parts. See if anytthing "looks:" like it might be susceptible (granted some areas might not even be visible to the naked eye, but i''ll do my best)

Now i've just gotta some think of a solution that might seal the problematic areas you guys have mentioned. At the very least to help mitigate rust should QC not have been addressed thoroughly.

Hopefully I can get it all done today as I was planning to vinyl the top as well for an added layer of protection.

I just took some pics of mine today. Installed June 15 of this year. 2.5 months and already rusting in several spots. I’m going to email the company and see what can be done. Obviously, I’m not pleased.

Man, now I really am thinking that I'm gonna need to add some sort of extra coating. I get where the engravings start rusting since that seems done after the powdercoat, but all the other places like the slotting and threads?!?! that is either bad QC or jus carelessness I feel like.

I still love the look of the rack, and while measures shouldn't need to be done receiving a brand new product, seems like that is what is going to be needed.

I don’t think they’re added after, I just think they’re so thin that the powder isn’t able to impregnate the cuts thoroughly enough to get good coverage.

That doesn't explain the bolt threading and slot areas though those are plenty big for the powder coat

So to give everyone an update, I have not yet installed my roof rack, as this whole post got me thinking of what could be the main cause. Keep in mind this is a brand new uptop kilo rack just received last thursday and only pulled out the box, never installed.

The pictures are of just 1of the main side pieces. But I imagine that the powdercoat issue is a part of all pieces that go through the process.

Ultimately from what I can tell its it seems like the powdercoat guy is doing bare minimum of what he's laying onto the parts.

The small halfcircle here is probably where the part was hung from, but you could see on the edge of the right hole, that there is a hairline edge thatdoesn't look like its fully covered.

a little more sharper shot and adjusted light to see where the edge is missing some coat

At first here I thought this might just be dust and thought ok lets try wiping this away. But rather it seems that these sports are really where the coat is just more thin. or didn't adhere well enough, and so by the time the rack reached me, some have sloughed off.

Don't worry about your uptop logo tho, there is plenty of coating there. nice and thick too. SMH

Also on the note of the lettering being too small for the powdercoating to penetrate into, at least on this part seems that it is more than large enough. But of course this is by the logo, so I imagine more time was spent spraying around this area.

Same "dust" marks, well no not dus, but thin powdercoating, and his is on the OUTSIDE that is visible to all.

Another one of those slots exhibiting signs edge of the metal showing that might become rust prone later.

So there you have ladies an gentlemen, brand new rack, still sketchy QC. I feel like I need to take the rack to a powder coat shop, pretty good feeling that if I had installed it, i'd start seeing rust stains real fast, and it barely rains here!

That's very worrisome. My bed rack is on order from them, so it feels too late to back out now. Also, they have a feature that I haven't really seen elsewhere, which is the variable height of the cross bars. I definitely appreciate the heads up @BuriedFriend.

How did it turn out ?? I’m thinking of buying the diamondback compatible mid height bed rack truss

Email them and send pics. I did and they replaced some (not all) of the parts. They blamed it on humidity and not quality control or quality of the product. Last email I sent they didn’t even reply.
I used a piece of plywood and floor jack so I wouldn’t have to completely take off the rack and tent. I took a lot of their parts to my local powder coater and got them done right. I’ll NEVER purchase from them again.

Humidity! lol. I’m in Houston. Guess I’m not getting this rack. It’s only for the mountains I suppose.

I wouldn’t do it. They still haven’t fixed the issues and blame other things besides their quality control.

Enough for me to stay away. I don’t even really ā€œneedā€ a bed rack. I just want something to attach jerrycans to and maybe a traxisboard without consuming bed space. Plus it just looks cool. And I’ve got the diamondback bed cover so this seemed to be a good option. I’ll need to go back to the drawing board.

I guess south Texas is not allowed to have roof or bed racks lol.
Not uptop at least. I quote
ā€œWhile we have updated our procedures to prevent corrosion, you will also need to evaluate your surroundings and apply any added steps needed to prevent corrosion from forming.ā€
Was they reply they sent me. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
