What Happens to the Navigation feature when the subscription expires

I have no plans to continue with subscriptions, they don't provide a lot of value to me with Android Auto.

I primarilly use my phones Google maps to navigate. I am curious what happens to the Toyota Map screen when that subscription expires. Do you still have onboard maps to show you were you are or does the feature give you a message screen

It just stops working. I think it shows up but when you click it it prompt you to renew the subscription. Totally not worth it since we have Carplay or Android Auto.

Yea confirmed. Mine didn't come with it, but I subscribed with it for a month. Useful, but so is my phone. Didn't prefer to get rung up eery month for a useless feature, so canceled it.

Yep..when you free subscription is up, that's it just blue screen on mine. Ain't paying for it. They'll nickel and dime you every month until the cost to have it will probably double within 2 yrs.

I believe one advantage is that I believe the Toyota maps is GPS based which might be helpful when you are in areas with limited cell phone coverage.

Does Toyota navigation compute paths without cell coverage?
Google maps will work offline if you download the maps, but it won't calculate a path.

Yes and no... Toyota uses AT&T network. I visited a friend where my personal AT&T service phone does not work, later on that day I was able to hit the preset Home button to navigate back home. So clearly, Toyota will auto download some data. You just won't get points of interest or live traffic data feed until it reconnects, but you do get turn-by-turn directions.


I suppose a better question that we need to find out is, if you arrive at a location without using your GPS [eg, you followed a friend there] and it doesn't have coverage, but then you want to leave using the GPS....would the GPS have downloaded the data in the background, or must one have used the GPS to get to the location in order to download new location data?



The only information I was able to find According to Toyota:
Cloud Navigation uses a network connection to ensure customers have the latest map, traffic, and routing information available. When connectivity is limited, Cloud Navigation uses previously downloaded map information to maintain coverage across the entire route.

The Cloud Navigation feature requires an active Drive Connect subscription. Toyota customers can subscribe via the Toyota app.

"GPS" and "maps" are two different things. A GPS device will know where you are (latitude and longitude) without cellular coverage, but unless it also has map data stored locally, it won't show you where you on a map.

Apple Maps and Google Maps both allow you to download maps to use without cell coverage, but you have to think ahead. I have my local area downloaded because it has long stretches without coverage, it helpfully tells me when it's using offline maps.

Yes, when I went to Yellowstone last year, we downloaded the Apple map and thus were still able to make new turn by turn directions. This was very useful when we decided to alter the root. 2 years prior I had not downloaded the map so when we altered the route we were on our own as there is no cellular connection in Yellowstone except at Old Faithful

Just to clarify. Does Toyota navigation generate new driving instructions while off-line?

Google maps will not. I downloaded the maps for the area I was going ghost town touring and after using directions to get to one I could not get new directions to head back the way I came. Used the Garmin that I had in the glove box and it created a path that took me out a different way (on a rather interesting dirt road). Google Maps still showed my position but when I ran off the edge of the downloaded map I was in "here be monsters" territory (blank screen with location marker in the middle).
