I've never had a roof rack on a truck so I was curious how much wind noise people are getting when they installed one. I recently installed this rack:

TRUMGETA 1000 lbs Roof Rack for 2024 2025 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

I really like the look of it but I am hearing some wind noise, mostly for crosswinds. A buddy of mine suggested removing the wind fairing. Any thoughts on that? I am also new to this whole roof rack thing so I'm wondering if maybe I'm just imagining it because I think it's different than without the rack 😆 .

Anyways, I was hoping to get some input from the forum as to their experiences with various roof racks. Does having the wind fairing make a difference with wind noise? I know it's there for aerodynamics so I'm leaning toward not removing it.

I'm curious if people can describe more or less for their specific racks. It'd be tough to do a comparison unless someone has bought several (I wouldn't be shocked if someone has ha)

When I installed my bed rack, the cross bars caused very noticeable (irritating) wind noise/whistling. After wrapping the bars w/ paracord in a spiral pattern, the noise was gone. Since the primary function of my set-up is for utility, having the cord there doesn't bother me a bit (YMMV). It's easy enough to remove if you don't like it, but if you feel like trying it out I'd guess you will have similar results---- if there are additional cross members, they may or may not need to be wrapped (likely depends on if the front slanted part blocks/shields them from the wind).

I spent a lot of time and effort on carry and rigging aspects in pre-sales mode for my 2024 and a year after waiting for Yakima to release "landing pads" for the gen 4 roof. I could not wait any longer so got traditional towers with 70 inch bars where I could still use the bars when the quick release landing pads do come out.

Quite a few associates with the square or overlander style complained (and still do) about noise, collecting dirt, or snow and ice in winter. Additionally, a hit to fuel economy. That said, I do hear wind with my setup but it takes me about 90 seconds to take it off altogether, and I can also carry the rack in the bed.

Some associates and just observations have shown the overlander style is a bother for boat carry, width and simplicity. With the mounts I own for other Yakima and general accessories, I can borrow a friend's or if needed buy a platform or basket type carrier.

It was a little bit comical to observe someone at a river landing who had both the overlander type rack with extra cross bars and short bed when my posse and I was there with the wider bars and long bed. That dude had to have steps to even load a single paddle board and far more straps 'n such to carry kayaks in the bed. In fraction of the time we loaded 4 watercraft.

Spread is another advantage of my setup. The folks I know with the overlander look racks have less spread so carrying a boat, board or ladder with a pair of NRS straps is less solid or easy.

It is a big plus to just not have any rack when I want it or carry the Yakima setup within the Fas-Top (combo or all in one tonneau & soft topper).

In addition to spread, the first pic might show how the towers and oval bars can adjust angle of the oval bars. I still have my ancient Yakima round bars and adapters that would work if I wanted everything to be fit within the cab width but the 70 inch bars make loading one item over the side easier in addition to easy carry of two wide boards or boats.

While you do hear the rack at highway speeds, it doesn't do whistles or rumbles or varying pitch sound like what some associates have.
