CV Axle leak after King 2.5 install

So I installed King 2.5s on my 2024 Tacoma and noticed my driver side axel started to leak some grease. I took it to Toyota and because of the suspension I was told it wouldn’t be cover (understandable). I guess I’m a little caught off guard because I haven’t seen anyone have issues with the CV axels or mention installing a kit to lower then to a more natural angle. Toyota is recommending a replacement and that I look into getting a kit to lower the angle of the axel. Center hub to fender before install was 21 1/2 in and now I’m at 23 1/2. Any advice ?

Not that this may be applicable, however one of my previous SxS's was a Honda Talon 1000R. I purchased new Eibach springs for it and had someone replace them, however I later discovered that hey installed the springs completely incorrectly. During the timeframe that they were installed incorrectly, the rear axles, (CV's based axles) was constantly popping off the rubber boot, and causing dirt to get into the housing. After I fixed all of the springs myself, the rear axle (boot/cover) never popped off again. I surmised that because of the extreme angle (additional height due to incorrect springs in the rear) caused this. I'm not suggesting that this is your issue, but certainly made me aware of having too much suspension, lift in this case. Not sure if this in any way translates to what your experiencing, but thought I'd share my particular experience none the less.

This is from the bottom driver side. After I installed the front coilovers I let the truck sit overnight wheels on assembled etc. then worked on the back the following day. Thats when I noticed a small pile of gray grease.

I don't know much in this area but did you also replace the upper control arms? I'm just going off of what I've seen on youtube but several youtubers have posted that a different upper control arm is necessary due to the change in angles (if I'm remembering correctly). Just food for thought from a guy that watches a lot of youtube lol

Is the boot torn or did some grease just get squeezed out from the clamp? It's too hard to tell from the picture. If it's not torn, then I think installing the shocks may have caused some grease to squeeze out.

I’m also a YouTube guy lol and yes I got the Icon billet UCAs. I thought that would do it as well. My passenger side seems to be fine but I’m not expert at what angles CV axels can operate under. I was reading on another threat that icon made some diff drop kits but all I see is bad reviews of those with vibrations.

Before replacing anything or freaking, wipe that area down really well and get all of the grease off the boot. Clean it up good with simple green or other degreaser. Then, keep an eye on it. If it’s torn, you’ll know soon enough and you can install a replacement CV, or just a new boot. It doesn’t look like you lost much grease at all, at least not enough to worry about. If you can go as far as you did with a coilover install, you can go a little bit further and pull the hub to get to the CV.

But first, give it a good wipe down and inspect it. Let us know!

Yeah I really need to get under there I don’t see a clear tear and I thought it was just initial squeeze as I don’t have as many drops after leaving it overnight. I’m wondering if there’s an easy way to tell if the boot is torn. Dealership quoted 1300 for replacement and recommended that I replace it.

Haha, you’re welcome. Sometimes taking a step back and thinking it thru is the answer. Highly unlikely you tore it and that grease could have been on your sleeve, tools, who knows. My bet is you’ll clean it off and never see evidence of it again. If you do, take a deep breath, buy a new boot, or full axle and swap it out.
