I didn't pick "excellent" condition because I doubt anyone actually gets that value? Not sure.

Either way, looks about right. I'll put 125k miles on it and check it again, probably still be worth $20k :cwl:

I don’t think this is a knock on 4th gens vs previous gens as much as it is a reflection of current market trends. I have no data to support but would be willing to bet that 2024+ non-special edition Tacomas have depreciated less than equivalent Rangers or Colorados over the same time period.

For better or worse, the COVID market is behind us and the economy is generally slow. Deals on new vehicles are abundant, but it isn’t the best time to trade in a truck you bought at or near MSRP.

Traded in my 24 TRD Sport w/Premium package with 5k miles for a 26 TRD Sport same options and got 39k trade in, they did however come off the MSRP for the new 26.

Great now every dealer in the Bay Area is spamming me :cwl:

I unchecked the "share info with dealers" option, what the fuck KBB, garbage website

I responded to one of the dealers and said "Not interested in trading, unless you get a 3G xtracab 4x4 2.7L MT in" :cwl:

Put your vin into Carvana and see what it comes back. Sounds about right. I did with ours and it was about that. It isn’t Covid times where supply is limited driving up used prices. The market is flooded with cars now. Way too many deals to be had hence driving used car prices down.
It's a little better. $40.6k offer from Carvana. Definitely not covid times, but I only bought one during that timeframe. I'm sure volume is playing a role, but still seems like a big swing.

We've been shopping extensively helping our daughter, and from my wife's interests. That's used for one, new for the other. What is really obvious visually, and from mouths of dealer staff is a whole lot of inventory and sales not strong across all segments.

On Saturday when our not for sale or trade Tacoma was what we drove, it was interesting to have a dealer with used gen 4 short bed Sport and a TRD Pro right there say he wished they were my long bed TRD OR so the market might be fickle. Yesterday a used lot sales manager said he can't get enough good practical vehicles < $25,000, and that the typical of many always after things they probably can't really afford.

A near universal truth also seems true in the shopping we're doing. Luxury, high trim and some special edition vehicles depreciating more.
You might be right about the premium options and higher trims not holding value as well. I'm guessing the higher initial cost is keeping people away and dealers having to discount a bunch to sell them. Then knowing it'll be a tough sell used, won't offer as much on trades.

I know it was a different time, but 58k seems high for a Sport, regardless of Hybrid or not..
Starting price on the TRD Sport Hybrid is about $47k, add in delivery/destination charge, over $8k for the premium package, and other options like bed scene lighting, bed step, exhaust tip, floor mats, etc. and you get over the $58k mark. They were dealing a little at that point. I think about $5k off and there was a rebate. Can't remember exactly what the rebate was.

Here when you trade, it lowers the taxes you pay on a vehicle. For example I was offered $44,000 trade value on a 55,000 TRD OFF ROAD 6’ bed. So I’d only pay taxes on $11,000.
So in effect I’m getting 44k + 12% =49.28 K
My truck was 54,785 + 12% =61,359.2

So it’s depreciated 61359-49,280=12,079 or
about 19.25%. Call it 20% on 2024 OR with 29,000 km.
It's the same here. The tax break is why I don't really look at selling it myself. Usually ends up being a wash. But, I don't really factor it into trade value. It's less I have to pay, sure, but it's not what the dealer is actually offering for my truck. When I got my 2020, I kept negotiating until the trade and selling price of the 2020 were the same so I didn't have any tax to pay. lol

I bought the 2024 for like $5k off plus a rebate, so it was a bit below MSRP, but still doesn't feel like a good time to trade. lol

Was interesting for an experiment. 5k depreciation (private sale value) in about 1 year and 16,800 miles sounds about right for the first year. I expect it to slow to like $1500 a year or so until it levels out at $20,000 until / if the truck hits 200,000 miles. As expected, the lowest trim truck doesn't see as sharp of a first year depreciation hit as the higher trims.

I leased my 2025 SR5 4dr Long Bed 4WD for $1600 (tax and title) down and $269/month for two years. The purchase price was $43k and some change minus dealer add ons, and the depreciated or buy out value at the end of the lease is $33k and some change.

I think it has to do with the market being at a stand still and production back to more normal numbers.

Bought my 2025 SR5 4x4 LB, 39.5k vehicle price, 42.3k after taxes. Actually was curious earlier tonight to see what it’s worth now, and got an offer through Carmax for 37.5.
(step daughter’s bf was debating between new Tundra or Tacoma, so we talked truck prices)

You always have to consider that dealers lowball to create profit and margins out of thin air. If people would be smart and refuse their offers, they would have to raise their offers, but many people only see the new shiny car and get taken for a ride by the dealer. In my recent experience, dealers was 10-15k room for resale. It’s nice that most people give them that room.

hard to blame them as their business model clearly works. Next time, tell them to take a hike and sell it yourself. I made 14k more on a 911 I sold private party instead of trading it.

Yea dude, I almost always sell my own. I traded an EV in but that was a special circumstance during crazy covid times where they gave me what I paid for it. But this last time before the Taco the local dealership wanted to give me between 4-6k for my lifted '06 f150, I sold it in a day on Craigslist for $15K

There are exceptions, but luxury models and premium stuff more margin in a new sale has pretty much always had more depreciation in the used market. Still helping our daughter shopping, one salesman pointed that out yesterday across vehicles whether brand or packages.

Yet again, another used lot manager asked me if the gen 4 long bed TRD OR was for trade. That's no for me, and the guy said long beds are fewer just like new inventory. For the specific model he said that utility plus the OR's locker are always something used shoppers look for.

Something else that goes on did with the gen 4 models. At first new generations will sell at higher retail prices. In asking about what seems like a fickle market, that was simple too. Higher inventory pressure from prices many cannot afford.

Another note for the Gen4, it's also the generation with the most real competition in a long time. The Ranger needed a few years to get a real foot hold, the Colorado came back at the end of 2023, and nissan has decided to do something other than make trash fleet trucks out of the Frontier. All of them now are rolling out sub models to try and compete with the Pro too.

The 2nd Gen was the last to see any real competition, but the "Big 3" had all ruined their trucks and killed them off by 2012. The only "foreign" automakers trucks were the Frontier which has been basically a boring fleet truck and the Ridgeline which isn't really a truck at all. Which is all the 3rd gen had for competition at the start.

Personally I looked at all of them and did a ton of research before deciding the Tacoma was probably still king of the hill. Which is why I picked it, and also likely the reason that despite all the newcomers hitting the ground running, it still has the best resale by far even though it's reduced.
