To each their own, It's a preference imo.
Auto's have been pretty well sorted out, but the newer 8+ speed stuff might not have the longevity of the older autos.

One of the biggest attractions to the MT, for me, is the simplicity of DIY fluid changes and regular maintenance. Given what we're seeing with the shortage of techs and the cost of taking stuff to the good ones just tells me DIY is going to be an increasingly valuable part of vehicle ownership. Taking a vehicle in for service is an absolute last resort and recent experience with even the basic recalls at Toyota only solidifies my feelings on that.

The other part is auto's drive me nuts, feels like there's something between what I want the vehicle to do and what it actually does. That and most shift HARD and I'm like people tolerate this sh*t?!?

I have never owned an Auto, and will hold out for as long as I'm able.

I also do my own maintenance. This was another reason I went with the 6M/T.
Fortunately, there is only one tech at Toyota Turnersville in South Jersey that I actually trust. If I can't get him signed up, I will wait until I can. Soon I have to deal with the rear brake line recall. Other than the recalls I do everything myself.

I've had all four generations of Tacomas. All were autos. That's hundreds of thousands of miles. Zero issues.

Manuals? Clutches wear out, $1,500-$2,000 if I'm not mistaken.
I agree.

I have owned 2 cars with MT and the rest ( a little over 100 ) have all had AT.

If you plan on keeping you vehicle for over 100 k, plan on replacing the clutch plates in the near future.

If you plan on trading or selling your MT vehicle, prepare to take a "hit" on the resale value on most cars/trucks. Not all, but most.

Even though AT cost more up front, I think in the short term AND long term, the MT will cost more to own (unless you replace the clutch plates yourself).

Labor is sky high at the Service Shops now days. The AT usually last close to the life of the car IMHO.

In any event, if the person driving likes driving a MT better I say go for it. If you are looking at cost, I think the AT makes more sense here in the States.

We had no regrets with the manual and enjoyed it, but the only issue I had was I hated when you are in 1st gear at a stop and have to shift from 1st to 2nd half way thru the intersection. Very Very short gearing
My 2006 Tacoma (silver TRD Offroad MT, just like my 2024) had the same short shift from 1st to 2nd. It was very irritating back in 2006. It still is, but I think it's designed to be that way so that 1st is low enough for those times that you had a full load in the bed, or when your are towing something, or some other harsh clutch treatment situation.

All of my past Toyota's have been manuals except the one lone 2016 SR with 6-speed auto.

86 2wd, no issues with 5-speed
86 4wd, no issues with 5-speed
85 2wd, no issues with rare 4-speed manual
97 2wd, no issues with 5-speed

2005 X-Runner with 6-speed manual, had it replaced under warranty. Syncro issue cracks led to grinding into 3rd and 5th gear. Went to dual friction clutch with the added power coming from motor. Dyno'd at 320hp, factory clutch simply failed turn 3 on Blackhawk Farms Raceway. No issues since on Road America.

2010 SR5, no issues with 5-speed
2016 SR, no issues with 6-speed auto

2024 TRD Sport, 6-speed manual replaced under warranty at just about 15k miles. Truck drove fine, but only had reverse, first, third and 5th gears. No back gears whatsoever. Now drives just fine.

How did the dealer handle this? Did they rebuild or replace your 24 6 M/T?

Yup, got a new one, no charge. Took 2 weeks, mostly to get the trans in.

The tech is the #1 Toyota tech for Chicago Region (most senior and most certified), he worked on my X-Runner back in the day. He took it out just around the dealer lot, and stated, yup, it falls on the TSB notice, no 2nd, 4th or 6th gear.

They gave me a 25 Camry LE awd for the 2 weeks.

Awesome. I am glad they took care of you. It is hard to find a good Tech these days. Most of them are treated like dog crap at the dealers.

No regrets . But only wish if it didnt have electric steering . If battery is dead . Steering is locked . Very hard to do clutch start if battery is dead unless you can roll the truck in straight line .

That's something I did not think of. This is my first truck with electric steering. Interesting

I didn't think on the newer Vehicles you could do a clutch start? That's news to me

I love this argument from auto drivers lol. Yeah, probably roughly $2000 at a shop. But, it's a wear part for one, much like brake pads. Don't buy a manual if you eventually don't want to replace a clutch.

Secondly, don't be an idiot and know how to roughly drive a clutch driven truck. I've got 55,000kms on my original clutch. Believe me, I've slipped that sucker and smelt it more times that I can count. On and off road, grinded the hell out of second and third just not paying attention. Everything still feels exactly as it did as the day I bought it. If I can get 100,000kms out of a clutch, given what I do, I'll be more than happy. That said, I expect to exceed 100,000kms out of the original clutch.

Besides, there's hundreds of local backyard mechanics looking to make an extra dollar off the clock that'll happily change out your clutch for much cheaper than paying shop time, implying you don't have the know how to do it yourself, which realistically isn't too hard providing you have a garage to work in.

I'd rather have to change out a clutch at 100,000kms than I would watch my trans temps every time I take her off pavement like most folks are doing right now.
Agree . stock clutch can last long time .Most of the modern 8 speed 10 speed transmission (ford ,gm ,toyota ,ram ) have overheating problem when towing and off roading . I would rather have manual over these new auto transmission and replace clutch if i need to .

The 8 speed in my Camry before I got this truck was actually my deciding factor on being so dead set against getting another Automatic lol. Those i4 Camry's actually could've been way more preppy if it wasn't for the fact that it wasn't to shift to 2nd near immediately
