Center console or ? Gun Safe

This was brought up by some someone in the Tesla forums when I asked. Console Vaults aren’t fully enclosed. Possibility they don’t qualify under letter of the law according to ca doj. That being said, I’m using them in both the Tesla and Tacoma when I have to leave my ccw behind.

Per CA DOJ:

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 16850, the term "locked container" means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment.

Wow it’s like Toyota had that in mind when they designed the console. Like a glove. If only there was a way to design a track system where you can push a button and have the pistol presented up for a full grip.

Holster isn’t secured inside, but while carrying its slim, simple and comfy.

I went with a center console safe and it works great for quick access when I'm in the truck. If you're still deciding, you might want to buy gun safes that fit well under the rear seat too—gives you more space and keeps stuff out of sight. I found it helpful to check measurements first since some options don't line up with the seat brackets.

My usual source (Consolevault) does not have one that fits the hybrid Trailhunter, anyone with a TH have any luck with the OEM one and if so, what is the part#?

I’ve got a Trailhunter with the center console safe. It’s easy to install. Bought it during sale & discounting around Labor Day 2025 right after buying the truck for $230 plus CA tax. Good quality. Has a 3-digit combo or use the stubby round key. It opens towards driver so if passenger wants to use it, they need a long left arm with loose joints.

I can fit 2 small pistols in it but don’t carry in there. I use a Condition1 179 box or small biometric safe that fits under passenger since I put in Seat Jackers front/rear from Desert Does It to lift seats 1”.

I can’t find a console safe that fits a govt length 1911.. I have a tethered and locked container for the truck and keep my legally permitted CCW firearms on my hip when I drive
