Hey folks - I'm looking for a dash cam that I don't have to run cabling through the dash that will instead draw power from the rear view.
I've found some but am purchase shy wanting to be sure the connections are Taco friendly. Bonus if they can do the same with a 2021 Outback.
Leaning into you all and your expertise. Not looking to solder any connections - mostly plug and play if possible.

Appreciate your insight!

I bought a Viofo A229Pro which comes with the rear cam. I routed the cable myself. I had ZERO experience, I just took it slowly and patiently and got it done. In my case, i ran the cable outside the cab and followed the frame to the back of the truck where I mounted the camera in my SmartCap rear window. The only tricky part is getting the C pillar trim off.

I will probably write a short how-to in the coming days if you're interested in tacking such a job.

Do a search for "Dongar" dash cam adapter. I used one on my 3rd gen and now on my Trailhunter. Super easy to install. It plugs into the power under the trim around your mirror and gives you a USB power connection. Tons of info out info on it out there once you know what you are looking for. Use it with any cam that has a USB plug. HTH!

p.s. I got mine on Amazon.

I think Fitcam X would work with what you want to do here.
I had one in my 3rd gen, and have one in my new 4th gen, they have been great.
you can even get them with an available rear cam if you wanted.

I like that Garmin dash cam. I would love to see some pictures showing where you installed.

New to the dash cam game. No issues with the Garmin only being 1080?

I like that Garmin dash cam. I would love to see some pictures showing where you installed.
I am currently out of town. Sorry that I can't get pics of it until next week but this is how I installed it:
  • I used power from the OEM dashcam power port above the roof console that houses the dome lights.
  • I then ran that cable to the right of the rear view mirror base cover and mounted the Dongar Pro adapter (2-sided tape).
  • I then used a USB C to C cable to power the camera.
  • I mounted the camera to the windshield directly behind the mirror. Using my sightline looking at the mirror, I positioned the mount so that the LED indicators on the bottom of the camera were barely visible under the mirror.
The Dongar website has an excellent installation video.

I hope this helps!
