My subscription is up and my FOB won't remote start. My dealer is telling me I need the subscription for the FOB to remote start.
WTF? Is that accurate?

Not accurate. Fob is standalone without the subscription.

However, the fob is complete trash for remote start.

The fob isn't tied to the app. But with how finicky the remote start is and how low the range is, I never use it. I can usually walk to the truck and get in in less time than it takes to get the timing right on the fob to remote start it.

Not sure ... (everything I've read says you do need a subscription) However, even with a subscription , the FOB is a "touch" cranky . It's maybe described, "kinda rhythmic." Just pace it with about a half second or so (at most) between button presses. Just keep the spacing the same and hold on the 3rd press until the truck lights blink. (using the lock button)

(I can't test this as I've had continuous subscription and I don't want to temporarily delete my working account)

The following is from one of Toyota's sites... (could be England though)

To remote start your 2025 Toyota Tacoma using the key fob, follow these steps:

It works I've been using the remote since April when my service ran out... I just caved today and subscribed for the winter... Definitely easier using the app... But the key fob works on its own for remote start.... It's good enough... I live in Alaska and I don't want to hang my keys out the door messing with the 3 press combo to start in the middle of winter...

I was paying the $15/month for the app, but an update they made turned it into complete garbage. It would log me out multiple times per day, despite selecting the "Keep me signed in" button. Discontinued until they can fix it.

Nope. Just spot on impeccable timing.

Remote starting via key fob is a pain, 3 clicks have to be timed evenly with the last click being held down

even after that , takes another 3secs or more for the start to happen

you seriously need to just learn the timing. I just say the word To-Yo-TAAAA as i click, click, hold, and once you learn the cadence and timing, it gets way easier.

It's not like:

Click-wait-click-wait, holdd... it's faster. Just play aroudn with it for a few tries, and once you get the timing, it works.

Video showing timing:
