One of the stupidest things they ever put in a vehicle.

Lee Zeldin (EPA Administrator):
Start/stop technology: where your car dies at every red light so companies get a climate participation trophy.
EPA approved it, and everyone hates it, so we’re fixing it.
2024 Tacoma EPA to ban the Start/Stop Feature 1747275026334-ra

EPA to ban start/stop tech.

Does anyone know how to open that cover where that switch is?
The switch is a momentary contact. Two of the wires get jumped together which cancels it out permanently.
I wouldn't know which two without opening it up and getting to it.
I will let you all know when I get it done how to do it if it's not already posted.
If anyone has done this, please let me know with any info you could provide which would be greatly appreciated.
I did it to my Rangers and Colorados. Very easy to do. Someone had posted on the Ranger forum which two wires to put a little jumper in between.
They do have a little harness they call the Start/Stop Eliminator for just under $100 which did the same thing. Just plug it in between the wire harness and the switch.

Yeah - it sucks, although it works so well in the hybrids that I don't mind.

The EPA can't really ban it but they will stop giving car makers points for adding it. It is hard to say if that will make it go away or not. Probably not right away because the redesign would cost a lot of money. But in time we might see less of that stupid idea in our trucks.

I don’t believe we have that in the Taco’s but we do have the stupid message that tells you that I will shut the vehicle off after a certain time of running.

Tacos have, just certain trims
Right, and it has to be turned off on every engine start to get the bonus on the CAFE requirements. That at least should change once the EPA updates the rules, so hopefully it can be turned off once and done. That should only take a software change, which improves our chances of seeing it sooner.

For some reason that message irritates me too, but I haven't looked to see if it can be defeated.

yeah I had a BMW X3 that had a smaller button by the main start button that disabled this. It always felt spooky just sitting at a red light in dead silence, I prefer to have the engine on, but also 50 years old and generally hate everything at this point.

Wouldn't take much of a re-design, just a software change. For hybrids, it's one of the things that hybrids are designed to do. They have the power to start accelerating without the engine running.

Yeah, my comment was meant for non-hybrids. Letting you disable stop/start in a menu could definitely be done in software, but you would be surprised at how much a simple change can cost when all of the changes are verified, approved and tested. The actual code changes would be pretty simple from my experience.

No complaints on that in my hybrid. If I don't pay attention to what my truck is doing I hardly ever notice that it is happening.

Never understood the irrational hate for this feature. It actually saves fuel in city driving, and it doesn't ask much in return.

It should be pretty simple for any manufacturer to switch the default from Enabled to Disabled.

The start/stop function has always bothered me, I'm glad it may be coming to an end, even if it just the mandate of it. Start/Stop is one of the reasons I have avoided hybrids. I prefer the running all gas or all electric. I could see a good reason if the vehicle would run on battery until it was discharged enough to switch to gas, but just not the constant starting and stopping of the gas engine.
