I'll be the first to say, an i4 exhaust deserves nothing more than to stay stock. From cars to midsized, it all sound the same. Drone, mid-toned, horrible. That said, we're entering a whole new world of EPA regulations and "how much power can we fit into an eco engine to pass EPA standards", the days of those v6 cat back and straight pipe days are finishing..

Just listen to those pops at redline, not too often you get that from an i4 Cat Back. Hate it or love it, it exists, and I see why.

That said, there's a couple I've heard over the last couple weeks while trying to figure out how to waste my overtime pay that have caught my eye, just slightly.

Lets start a megathread. If you've got an exhaust (cat back, header back, straight pipe, resonator back, doesn't matter), lets hear it. It's all subjective, some will hate, some will love, others will think nothing of. This thread is a no judgment zone, and I know this community can respect that, Add your sound clips.

Bonus Points For:
  • Brand, model name.
  • Cold Start
  • Warm Start
  • Take Off
  • Fly-By
  • Normal City Driving
  • Manual (Can't stress this enough, I want to hear someone's manual setup)

I've been looking at a couple cat backs myself but I want the best bang for my buck. Was initially going to just buy the axel dump but I personally find it just sounds like an exhaust leak without the resonator and no aftermarket, let's see what you got. Surely someone with a manual got something at this point.

Side note, there's a lot of negativity around exhaust modifying an i4, seen lots on this forum with the Tacoma. To those folks, just let them do their thing, this isn't your thread. Don't yuck someone's yum, unless you pay for that yum

Looking to buy a 4th Gen taco soon.
I’ve got the AWE exhaust on my 6 speed and I love it. Paired with the SXTH Element intake, it makes cool turbo sounds and occasionally pops during upshift. Makes driving a lot more enjoyable. Additionally, the AWE exhaust does NOT drone. All the benefits with no annoying drone.

I tried attaching a driving clip, but the file size was too big, unfortunately.

I beg of you to please attach it lol. AWE really peaked my interest with their short clip but I really want to hear it in all aspects on a 6 speed before I sink money into it.

Try streamable if you can, it's my go-to for these style forums.

I’ll just say, my AWE 0FG exhaust shipped yesterday… can’t wait to put it on my TRD OR Hybrid.
I have the factory TRD exhaust catback…. And if I’m outside the truck right next to it, it sounds pretty decent. But inside the truck it may as well be silent.
Hoping the AWE gives me the sound I want with none of the drone.

I make efforts to not stand out when driving or in public spaces so would not modify my Tacoma exhaust. Still, it seems more like my wife's and a neighbor's high output German 4 cylinder engines than most of the 4 cylinder automobiles in the neighborhood.

Also count me in with liking the quiet cab and noise cancelling. I've had performance cars and spent 10 years driving class 8 semi tractors which were too loud then. Had way too much noise growing up with a scrapyard and farm. My Tacoma has been great but if I had the choice I'd have also avoided the modern mean/swollen look too.

:)

Idk, this truck doesn't scream performance exhaust. At least not for the exhaust note. I could see giving it more room to breath if you were modding to increase trq/HP. Truck exhaust notes should sound more like a V8 or even V6. I do LOVE my truck as I'm sure we all do but making it sound like a 1997 Eclipse is silly to me.

I've been tuning imports since 1997 and I don't know, it feels like the wrong vehicle to to try and get that sound from.

I'm not huge on exhausts on Trucks, but something about the AWE exhaust just sounds like they got it right. Not too loud, but a nice deep tone and gives it just enough character without being obnoxious. And its subdued when just cruising so you can hold a conversation without raising your voice. Definitely going to waste my money on one for my 6th Gen 4Runner when it releases and might put one on the wifes Tacoma Limited if she wants it.

Call me an old fart and a boomer, but I grew up with muscle cars, and these just sound ridiculous. Kinda like when we put a megaphone on our mini-bikes.

A lot of people still coming in to give their two cents over exhaust systems on i4s, even with me asking for them kindly not to, some people just can't help themselves I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

Like I said, it's not for everyone. It's not overly for me either but there's a few that doesn't sound all that bad. But I was hoping to create a thread where the people who DO enjoy such things can share such things with the others. Unfortunately, it's quickly going the other way. Sad to see.

Get over yourself. It's an open forum.
OP just wanted to have a nice thread where people could compare different exhausts and have ideas of what each is like before they purchase. You just come in here with your boomer ahh complaining and reminiscing about the old glory days.

I bought a Flowmaster flow fx turn down. I'll upload sound clips when it gets here. It's supposed to be really quiet, which is what I'm looking for. I like how the AWE sounds but I'm afraid it would be too loud for my taste. We'll see, I'm really just hoping for better throttle response and more turbo sound.

Hi Kids,
I've had the AWE exhaust for 7 months now. I'll try and post an audio file. The kit is high quality. The install is straight forward. My first impression was it's much louder than I expected. My wife thinks it's loud. After having lived with it this long..........I love it!!!!
It is definitely different than anything else out there. At idle it is cool but growly. On an uphill with some throttle and turbo it howls! Wonderful noise. For reference, I like the Ducati Panagale 1290 at redline, The Mazda 3 rotor Le Mans racer, Porsche GTS3, P51, and the Cummins 591. Going uphill at 1800 RPM with a little turbo it just sounds exquisite!

Cheers,
PO
