@lauren01 That brings up a good question. Does anyone know if this tank works with hybrids? There are differences in their fuel systems compared to the non-hybrid trucks, and has LRA indicated that those have been addressed?

Oink Oink or whatever sound a guinea pig makes. Don’t know yet. If there is a problem with fit or function, I won’t be getting this tank. Right after I placed the order, I sent the order email back to LRA to highlight that I have a Trailhunter with 6’ bed. Fingers crossed that they will kick back the funds if they find out they can’t put the unit on and have everything work.

An extra 53 of fuel (14 gallons) weighs approximately 85lbs. You add the weight of the long range gas tank that's 90lbs = 175 lbs. from what I can find the stock tank weights 35-40 lbs empty so. More like 140 - 145lb difference. Which still isn't bad at all. 100% Worth considering if the Toyota computer could be adjusted for the fuel capacity.

Just looking at the 3rd gen one... LRA says
  • The fuel gauge will remain accurate, DTE will not. Once the E-light comes on there is 7 gallons remaining.
7 gallons which would be ball park 100 miles... so the factory DTE isn't all that important.... but would still be nice .
If it's a Toyota product, you'd like to think that they can do a software adjustment to recalculate the DTE?

I may have missed this information but will this interfere with skid plates or any kind of factory warranty issues with fuel system? 🤔

Spoke with Khris at LRA. No problem with hybrids and 6’ bed fit or function. Yay for that!
But…They won’t install on a California registered vehicle. It’s too costly to pay the State of CA for our CARB sticker. I completely get that.

We could pick up in Boise and DIY—he makes it sound relatively easy, mentions getting a fuel line pick tool(?) etc.
We have a 3-ton jack to lift the tank into position too. Although I am not feeling particularly brave at the moment….

We then discussed having LRA ship the unit either to a pickup point (Las Vegas) or to an installer not in California.

I have relatives in Oregon that I can stay with if Wanderlust Overland will receive and install for me. I’ve reached out on their contact form (their voicemail greeting suggested contacting that way).

If you exchanged your license plate with a "tag applied for" piece of paper just for the install, how would they know it's a CA-registered vehicle? "I have a [cabin, vacation home] in [non-CARB state]; I've changed the registration to that address and am awaiting my new vanity plates" etc etc.

I might explore that route. I talked with him about re-registering my vehicle in Oregon in case I move there….lol…I have close family but I am not much good at being a lawbreaker. Gas tank jail is one thing, but California car registration shenanigans makes me more nervous than sleeping in wife’s rooftop tent.

Will they install on an OR-registered vehicle? It's still a CARB state.
